Samsung's New VR Live Pass To Bring UFC & More To Gear VR

Samsung introduced the VR Live Pass for the Gear VR, a new program that will bring live streaming of various events like UFC 212 to owners of its virtual reality headset. The tech company announced that it has partnered with UFC, X Games, and Live Nation to bring live virtual reality broadcasts to the platform from early June through the Samsung VR app. The new initiative may be a bit hit with Gear VR users, as it will offer an immersive experience of various live events free of charge. The VR Live Pass will give Gear VR users access to close-ups and live action shots of all covered happenings, Samsung said.

The first of these unique live broadcasts will be held on June 3, covering the much-anticipated UFC 212: Aldo vs Holloway. Additional UFC 212 content will also be brought to the platform, including pre-event highlights with featherweights Jose Aldo and Max Holloway, as well as highlights after the bout. Other events that will also benefit from the VR Live Pass experience are the X Games Minneapolis which are running from July 13 through 16, and a live music concert in August. The South Korean consumer electronics manufacturer also released a trailer for Gear VR: UFC 212 – Aldo vs Holloway that can be seen below.

Samsung’s virtual reality ecosystem is currently officially supported in 45 countries across the world so the Gear VR that was commercially released in 2015 is already readily available to millions of consumers. In the first quarter of this year, the company sold 782,000 units of the device, ahead of other brands, adding that it’s expecting to maintain that performance in the short term. Further to this, a recent market report forecast that Samsung would surpass ten million sales of the Gear VR by 2018, even without a successor to the latest revision of its head-mounted display. Like many other tech giants on the planet, Samsung has been putting an increased focus on VR in recent years, both in terms of hardware and software. While this emerging technology is still far from mainstream adoption, it will likely continue gaining traction in the future as numerous companies including Samsung and Google continue investing into growing their VR ecosystems.
