Samsung Electronics started rolling out the update that’s meant to fix the reddish display panels of some units of the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus in India. The South Korean consumer electronics manufacturer has yet to officially release its new pair of Android flagships in the country but has still decided to roll out the software fix for the widely reported issue in an effort to ensure the launch of the devices is as effortless as possible. The software package is currently being distributed as an over-the-air (OTA) update that should be ready for download throughout India once the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus launch in the South Asian country on Friday, May 5.
The Seoul-based tech giant already started rolling out the same fix to other markets where its new Android flagship lineup launched in April, with consumers reporting that the software mostly eliminates the overly red hue of the screen. The update recalibrates the color balance of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus’ display, which is something that can also be done manually. The new software build is over 426MB in size, meaning it might also be shipping with some performance improvements and tweaks, which is suggested, but not confirmed by its official changelog, a portion of which is depicted in the screenshot beneath this writing. Owners of the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus in India should be running the firmware version XXU1AQDG following the new update. Anyone who doesn’t receive a notification prompting them to download the latest software package as soon as they set up their new Galaxy-branded smartphone should try searching for the patch manually by opening the Settings app, tapping the “Software update” option, and selecting the “Download updates manually” command on the following menu. Given the size of the new firmware build, users are encouraged to connect their devices to a Wi-Fi network before initializing the download.
Samsung previously said it’s hoping to retake a significant share of the premium smartphone market in India with the Galaxy S8 lineup and consequently solidify its position as the top phone vendor in the country. More details regarding the commercial performance of the company’s new flagships are expected to follow soon.
