LG’s 2016 flagship, the LG G5, looks to be now getting its April security update on Verizon’s network, and it’s coming with a few tweaks and fixes. The update will not only bring the security patch level of the phone up to April, but includes some under the hood changes that Verizon has stated will help the phone’s performance, and fix a few “known issues” that the device has. Verizon is not specific about exactly what is tweaked and fixed but says that the update has been tested and shown to improve performance. The update should be live for all users right now, and will bring the phone’s build number up to version VS98728B.
The April security patch is quite an important one, bringing fixes for a number of critical vulnerabilities that could potentially result in your phone becoming inoperable or your personal data, including just about anything you input into the phone, falling into the wrong hands. The fairly long list of exploits fixed in this update include a large number of privilege escalation vulnerabilities, which allow malicious apps to take advantage of a software error and do things that they normally wouldn’t have any right to do. In either case, while Verizon has not stated what fixes the newest update includes, this is a security update and as such, is one that a Verizon G5 owner should look to install at the earliest opportunity.
Those wanting to grab the update for themselves should be able to do so over the air simply by checking for updates in the “About Device” section of the device’s settings, as with just about any other phone. If no update is found and you have yet to take the new update, a reboot might do the trick. The update in question is fairly small, but all of the usual risks are present, and all of the usual precautions should be taken. Just connect your phone to the charger or make sure you have a reliable battery (with at least 80-percent left when you take the update), and leave the device alone while it’s downloading, installing, and optimizing the update.
