Rumor: Xiaomi 'Jason' To Hit The Market As Xiaomi Mi 6X

Recent reports from China are claiming that the Xiaomi Jason handset that was spotted on the GFXBench website recently will likely be the Xiaomi Mi 6X. Aside from the retail name of the device, the recent reports also claim that the Xiaomi Mi 6X will likely be released in August of this year. The Xiaomi Mi 6X is expected to be marketed as the mid-range alternative of its flagship device Xiaomi Mi 6.  While Xiaomi’s CEO has debunked earlier reports that the company is developing a mid-range version of its top-tier device, the smartphone manufacturer has yet to comment on the latest rumors regarding the Xiaomi Jason and the Xiaomi Mi 6X.

Recent leaks of the internal specifications of the Xiaomi “Jason”, which is now rumored to be the Xiaomi Mi 6X, highlight the handset’s mid-range nature. The device will be equipped with a Snapdragon 660, a mid-range chipset offering from Qualcomm. The Snapdragon 660 is comprised of an octa-core CPU which is divided into two clusters of quad-core processors clocked at 1.84GHz for the power-efficient cluster and 2.2GHz for the performance cluster. For the graphics processing needs of the device, the Xiaomi Mi 6X will use the Adreno 512 GPU. This mid-range GPU from Qualcomm should be powerful enough to drive the 5.1-inch 1080p display that the Xiaomi Mi 6X is rumored to sport. For the imaging needs of the potential buyers, the Xiaomi Mi 6X is likely to have a 12-megapixel rear camera that is capable of 4K video recording. Meanwhile, the handset is rumored to have a 4-megapixel front camera, bucking the trend of mid-range devices from China equipped with high-resolution front-facing cameras.

In addition to the specifications found on the GFXBench website, previous leaks also claim that the Xiaomi Mi 6X might be powered by Xiaomi’s own chipset, the Surge S2 SoC. It is not clear whether the said processor will be included in another variant of the device or the said processor is simply found in a model unit. The release of the Xiaomi Mi 6X allows the Chinese manufacturer to compete in the mid-range market, which is currently dominated by offerings from its rivals like Huawei, Oppo, and Vivo. True to its mid-range nature, the Xiaomi Mi 6X will likely be sold at $295 price tag, which is around $60 cheaper than the Xiaomi Mi 6.
