Samsung Commits To DeX To Further Empower Smartphones

Samsung has committed to DeX to further empower smartphones, and today at the company’s Samsung Developer Conference 2017, it laid out some of the things it’s doing to commit to DeX and expand the software so as to further bridge the gap between smartphone and desktop user experiences. Part of this expansion includes fostering existing partnerships with other companies, while also setting out to create additional partnerships with new companies, such as Square Enix, which Samsung has teamed up with to bring DeX support to the upcoming mobile title that is to be launched by the AAA publisher, Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition. That said, Samsung also states that the game will support the Vulkan API, though it does mention that this support won’t be available until sometime in “the coming months.”

Samsung’s entertainment partnerships for DeX also extend to companies like Super Evil Mega Corp. and Netmarble for games like Vainglory and Lineage 2 Revolution respectively, allowing users to enjoy those games in a desktop setting should they prefer to play them this way instead of with touch controls directly on the mobile device. It’s also worth noting that the DeX support for games like Vainglory are not extremely new as support was added for the game earlier this year.

Samsung isn’t just fostering partnerships with entertainment content providers, it’s also expanding partnerships with companies that deal with productivity, content creation, and collaboration, though Samsung doesn’t specifically name any of these partners in its recent blog post. Samsung also highlights the benefits of DeX for developers, pointing out that its Linux on Galaxy initiative gives developers a way to code on the go, and continue any work that they may not have finished on their mobile devices in a desktop experience when they get back home or to the office thanks to Samsung DeX, support for which is currently in beta for Linux on Galaxy. Samsung initially launched DeX alongside its launch of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, its two flagships which were announced in the beginning of the year and launched only a short time later. With DeX, users who have compatible Galaxy smartphones, such as the two mentioned above as well as the recently launched Galaxy Note 8. Samsung also discussed some of its future plans for DeX back in July. For those that are unfamiliar use of the DeX system requires not just a compatible Galaxy smartphone, but also the DeX Station dock which can be picked up for $249.99
