Units of the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 are now receiving the latest version of Xiaomi’s proprietary skin, the MIUI 9. This update contains a wide variety of new features, under-the-hood improvements, and bug fixes. One of the new features comes in the form of split-screen mode, a functionality that allows the user to view two applications at the same time. Also, the Silent mode can now be activated using the physical volume down button. Once the update is installed, the reading mode will be automatically activated at sunset and deactivated during sunrise, while the battery saver feature will be automatically turned off when the handset starts charging. The manufacturer has incorporated new virus scanning and payment scanning features into the Security Scan service as well. The notification shade, on the other hand, has been redesigned so that it now sports bundled notifications and quick replies.
Aside from the new features, a number of optimizations and software fixes are also included with the software upgrade. With this update, it is now less likely that the user will accidentally trigger actions on the dial pad due to unintentional presses. The cleaner app is now more capable of removing empty folders and should generally perform faster. Among the software bugs that the latest package has resolved are the tendency of WhatsApp to force close when in split-screen mode and some slow loading times of the home screen, which is primarily observed in devices running Android 7.1 Nougat. The speed of the fingerprint scanner has also been improved and apps can no longer modify the handset’s Wi-Fi connectivity status without the explicit permission from the user.
For those who are currently running the latest version of MIUI, Xiaomi will automatically roll out the new update over the air, although it may take some time before it reaches all units of the Mi MIX 2. Users may also attempt to manually trigger the installation process through the Updater app. The company reminds its users, however, to back up the contents of the handset to a personal computer or a microSD card in order to prevent loss of important data. Meanwhile, people with handsets running either the Chinese build of the ROM or some older versions of MIUI will have to flash the ROM that contains the latest variant of the software. The package and proprietary software tool needed for this procedure can be downloaded from the official MIUI website linked below.
