Chinese virtual reality company Pico detailed its latest standalone headset on Tuesday, adding that the gadget is now available for pre-orders directly from its website, priced at $749.00. The device still doesn’t have a firm release date attached to it and is only expected to start shipping in early 2018. The period during which the firm is accepting advanced orders is targeted at “qualified” enterprise clients, Pico said, suggesting prospective clients should contact the firm to find out more about its solution. The follow-up to the Pico Neo CV offers a significant hardware upgrade on nearly every front, starting with its system-on-chip of choice – the Snapdragon 835. Qualcomm’s high-end silicon already proved its worth by powering over 120 Android flagships developed over the course of this year, many of which were specifically designed for VR applications. Handsets like Google’s Pixel 2 series and Samsung’s Galaxy S8 lineup all ended up being more than viable options for smartphone-reliant VR experiences and the Pico Neo is meant to bring their performance to the next level by dedicating all of the Snapdragon 835’s raw processing power to rendering immersive virtual worlds.
During today’s press conference in Beijing, Pico also confirmed its latest offering provides users with six degrees of freedom, being designed to track motion in essentially every direction and identifying the movement’s of one’s head and controller in real time. The firm also detailed the expansion of its business-to-business (B2B) Enterprise Solutions Program catering to prospective clients and confirmed Pico Zense modules intended to serve as comprehensive machine vision solutions are now also available for pre-orders. The systems primarily rely on the newly launched Pico Zense Time-of-Flight (TOF) sensors that can make up a hardware backbone of a broad range of technologies utilizing computer vision. Related SDKs and other development software are also part of the Pico Zense package, the company said, adding that the same applies to extensive after-sales support.

The Chinese consumer electronics manufacturer is expected to reveal more details about its upcoming solutions at the next iteration of the Consumer Electronics Show set to take place in the first half of January. No VR partners have been publicly named by Pico, though its solution is likely to attract some tech-savvy retailers by virtue of its Kiosk Mode and support for custom user interfaces that the company is offering to its enterprise clients. The B2B package is eligible for volume pricing discounts and is advertised as being entirely scalable.
