Abode has announced the Iota smart home security gateway, a security device with an integrated camera that also has embedded voice control so users can interact with it as easily and effortlessly as possible. Better still, the Iota Security Gateway is compatible with Google Home, Amazon Echo, Nest, Z-Wave, Philips Hue, LifX, and Zigbee smart home products so even if you already have other devices from different specific brands there should be no worry about them not working with the Abode Iota system.
Abode designed the Iota system to work as a security camera to allow consumers to keep an eye on their homes while away, but like other security cameras it’s also much more than that. The integrated Full HD camera is capable of recording video and keeping track of who’s in the home at all times so you’re never unaware, and it can also be triggered by things like the front door being unlocked. The camera also has infrared LED lights so that it can provide night vision video recording in the dark, something which is pretty standard across most in-home security cameras these days which should make it no surprise that Iota has these capabilities too.
In addition to working with Google Home and Amazon Echo smart speakers Iota is fully compatible with the Google Assistant and Alexa digital assistant voice commands. The Abode Iota also has a companion application that users can install on their mobile devices, which opens up even more possibilities for management of the device, including setting up notifications to alert the user for specific events, whether that event be kids or a spouse arriving home from school or work, or someone being the home that isn’t supposed to be. The Iota is capable of connecting up to Wi-Fi networks which makes it possible to put it just about anywhere in the home, that said it can also hook up to an ethernet port for those that would prefer to keep the device connected to the internet through a hard wire connection instead, although that will end up limiting where it can be placed as it would have to be sitting next to the wireless router. Abode plans to show the Iota security gateway off at CES this week but it hasn’t mentioned a time frame for the launch or what it will cost.
