Exploring the hallowed halls of Hogwarts as the likes of Harry, Ron, and Hermione on everything from the original Sony Playstation, the Sega Dreamcast to the Nintendo Gameboy Advance, and more was a great way for fans of the books and movies to immerse themselves in the Harry Potter universe, but a game company called Jam City has posted up its first teaser trailer for a mobile game called Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery that seeks to take things a step further by letting you create your own witch or wizard and play out your own Hogwarts epic.
The teaser trailer shows off some of the most iconic locations in Hogwarts, such as the front courtyard where the famous final battle between Harry and Voldemort took place. Many characters that don’t appear to match anybody from the books or movies are present, and at one point in the video, what appears to be a chat button pops up in a corner. This means that this game could very well be a Harry Potter themed MMORPG, something fans have been clamoring for over the years. In the description, Jam City says that players will be able to play out their own Hogwarts story over the course of years, which could mean that players will get to take a fresh custom character to Hogwarts and watch them grow from a fledgling magician as a child, all the way into an accomplished mage as a grown adult. Both of these points of speculation are supported by the somewhat simple graphics; the game looks a lot like The Sims 2, which means it would be easy for developers to modify assets or release new ones on a whim. Naturally, this all opens up the possibility of episodic content, as well.
The game’s development is being overseen and managed by Portkey Games, a division of Warner Brothers that specifically caters to games taking place in the Potterverse. That same studio is also overseeing Niantic’s development of Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, an upcoming Potter-themed take on Pokemon GO’s augmented reality gameplay. The initial teaser does not show off a lot of gameplay or assets just yet, and a release date is still out of the question. Given the vast wealth of content available from the source material, it could be quite a while before this game hits the Play Store.
