Rumor: Xiaomi Surge S2 Specs Leak, Will Fuel Mi 6X / Mi A2

The Xiaomi Surge S2 specifications have just surfaced, as it seems like Xiaomi’s second-gen mobile processor is on the way. The Xiaomi Surge S1 was announced last year, the company’s very first mobile SoC, and it fueled one of the company’s smartphones, the Xiaomi Mi 5c. That processor was announced back in February last year, so it is quite possible that the company may announce its successor in the first quarter of this year, maybe even next month, which is in line with today’s rumor.

This rumor claims that the processor will be unveiled during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona next month, and that it will fuel the Xiaomi Mi 6X. This rumor also mentions that the SoC will fuel the Xiaomi Mi A2, Xiaomi’s second-gen Android One smartphones, which will be made available in India and a number of other ‘global’ markets. According to the rumor, the Xiaomi Surge S2 SoC will be manufactured using TSMC’s 16nm technology, and it will be a mid-range processor. Now, this SoC will be much more efficient as its predecessor was built using a 28nm manufacturing process. In any case, the Xiaomi Surge S2 will, reportedly, be a 64-bit octa-core processor, which will be compiled out of four high-performance ARM Cortex-A73 cores, and four efficiency-oriented ARM Cortex-A53 cores. The Cortex-A73 cores will be clocked at 2.2GHz, while the Cortex-A53 cores will be clocked at 1.8GHz, it seems. The Mali-G71 MP8 GPU will also be included on the chipset, which is a considerable upgrade compared to the Surge S1’s Mali-T860 MP4 GPU.

The Xiaomi Surge S2 will offer support for LPDDR4 RAM, and the UFS 2.1 flash storage will also be supported, in case you were wondering. This rumor claims that the Xiaomi Surge S2 processor will be on par with Huawei’s Kirin 960 SoC in terms of performance, which is the company’s flagship processor for 2016, and it was used in the company’s devices in most of 2017 as well, until the Kirin 970 was announced, and if the rumor is true, the Xiaomi Surge S2 will be quite a powerful chip. Considering that the Xiaomi Mi 6X and Mi A2 are mentioned, that probably means that the company will not be releasing the Xiaomi Mi 6c, the Mi 5c’s successor, but it remains to be seen what will happen.
