Sony’s new truly wireless earbuds are splashproof, but more than that they’re also designed to be sporty and cater to those who want earbuds with an active style to them, and like most of Sony’s headphones they’re also noise cancelling. According to Sony, these are the first truly wireless earbuds with a noise cancellation feature that also come with a splashproof design, which might be a pretty big thing for consumers who don’t want to forfeit quality sound just to ensure that earbuds won’t be damaged by a little sweat, rain, or water spillage.
The new earbuds, called the WF-Sp700N, come with an IPX4 rating which is what makes the earbuds splashproof, and they’ll be available in four different colors including White, Black, Yellow, and Pink in May of this year for a cost of £190. Something to make note of though is that Sony doesn’t mention anything other than UK pricing for these so there’s no word on U.S. availability or cost just yet. The WF-SP700N also feature a battery life of up to three hours, though this doesn’t include the two additional charges that come from the charging case, so when you factor this in the earbuds potentially have up to nine hours before needing to recharge them and the case.
In addition to the WF-Sp700N Sony has two other pairs of wireless earbuds that it’s announcing as well, which are the WI-SP600N, and the WI-SP500 models, which have an expected release of June and April at prices of £150 and £80 respectively. In regards to features, both these pairs of headphones come with the same IPX4 splashproof rating, and battery life for the WI-SP600N are about six hours, while the battery life for the other pair will be about eight hours making them the longest-lasting pair of the three. They’ll also be the most affordable, but paying a little extra does give some benefits. For instance, the WI-SP600N and the WF-SP700N will both receive Google Assistant support through an update in the near future, as will a handful of Sony’s other noise cancelling headphones, allowing for the capability to ask questions and initiate tasks hands-free on the smartphone that’s connected to the earbuds. As mentioned there’s no word on whether any of these will be launching in the U.S. at this point, so you might have to look at other options if you wanted some new wireless earbuds this year. All three of these pairs of earbuds were announced officially during Sony’s press conference at CES 2018 this week.
