The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas is in full swing, and Vivo has just shown off the world’s first smartphone with a working in-display fingerprint scanner. Vivo says that this is world’s first ready-to-produce smartphone with an in-display fingerprint scanner, and just to be clear, on the inside lies Synaptics’ in-display fingerprint scanner, ‘Clear ID’. That fingerprint scanner was announced last month, and Synaptics recently confirmed that it is already producing large quantities of Clear ID for the ‘world’s top five smartphone manufacturers’, and Vivo belongs in that group.
Vivo says that the device indicates when it needs you to place your finger on the display, the company says that a fingerprint image will appear on the display where you need to place your finger, after which the phone will unlock. You can actually see all this in action, as we’ve included a video of it down below. It seems like the display needs to be active in order for the fingerprint image to appear, after which it is active. Those of you who were hoping to place a finger on the display even when the display is turned off in order to activate the in-display fingerprint scanner, well, it seems like that is not an option, at least not yet. It is possible that some companies will find a way around it, though, maybe leave a small piece of the display active at all times, or something of the sort, as the in-display fingerprint scanner needs an OLED panel in order to work, and we all know that you can leave only a particular part of a display powered on when it comes to OLED panels. Vivo says that you will, of course, be able to use the in-display fingerprint scanner for payments as well, as it’s just as secure as a regular fingerprint scanner. Once again, once you need to pay something, and the payment solution supports fingerprint scanners, that fingerprint image will pop up on the display, and let you place your finger on it.
The company said that it will announce the availability of its first smartphone with an in-display fingerprint scanner in early 2018, though a date was not specified. The phone itself sports really thin bezels, and chances are that Synaptics actually partnered up with Vivo in order to show off its in-display fingerprint scanner, and Vivo created a phone for them, though it’s still unclear what is the phone’s name.
