Following the FCC certification of the world’s first at-a-distance wireless charging system – namely, the Energous WattUp – Energous Corporation has now revealed that it will be showing off two of its charging systems at MWC 2018. The WattUp Mid Field transmitter is arguably the more exciting of the two, being a new take on wireless charging that allows for low-power devices to be charged at a distance of up to 15 feet (4.5 meters) from the power source. Because distance affects charging rate, it is best suited for charging devices ranging from smartwatches and television remotes to game console controller and such. However, there are many other low-power devices that could benefit from the system which could drastically change the way consumers keep their devices powered up and ready to go.
The second system, the WattUp Near Field transmitter is admittedly far less impressive but could still revolutionize wireless charging or at very least make it much more appealing to consumers who may not be using devices with wireless charging. Energous says that the Near Field will be able to fast-charge smaller consumer electronics on contact but at a much higher rate than any current technologies. In fact, the company is confident enough to have dubbed it part of the Wireless Charging 2.0 ecosystem. While some partner companies are set to release compatible apparel and other products in the summer, the firm has not revealed a specific date for when either of its two innovations is set to come to any market.
In the meantime, the demonstrations will be conducted by the company with its long-time partner Dialog Semiconductor over the course of the event which runs from February 26 through March 1. Two of Dialog’s chipsets are set to be used in the demos – the DA14585 and DA1468x. Those will be utilized to showcase how both solutions work across a variety of real-world circumstances to provide a clear indicator of possible uses. Aside from the demonstrations, the company has also announced that it will be open to holding private meetings by appointment throughout the event. So anybody attending the event and looking to include these new charging solutions in a future product will likely want to head over to the official Energous website to get in touch with its representatives and schedule a gathering.
