A YouTube channel called ‘JerryRigEverything’ has released a new video that shows how well the Huawei Mate 10 Pro withstands scratches, heat, and pressure. The first test that was conducted was the scratch test, wherein the content creator used a Mohs hardness pick in order to examine the hardness of the handset’s front and rear panels. The display of the Mate 10 Pro is protected by a sheet of Corning Gorilla Glass 5, which has a hardness score of 6. This means that the front panel of the handset will not be damaged by razor blades and other similar items. The same glass covers and protects the front-facing camera located above the display. On the other hand, the shell and the physical buttons of the Mate 10 Pro are made of anodized aluminum, and it can be scratched by a razor blade. The handset’s dual rear cameras are also covered with glass, while the fingerprint scanner is made of plastic. However, even if the fingerprint sensor has already been damaged, the scanner can still recognize fingerprints quickly.
The burn test was then conducted following the scratch test. In the burn test, a lighter was placed near the handset’s display. The content creator then recorded the length of time needed before the flame damages the screen. It took 40 seconds before the AMOLED display of the Huawei Mate 10 Pro was damaged by the flame, lasting as long as another flagship offering, the Samsung Galaxy S8. It is noted in the video that unlike most IPS LCD displays, AMOLED displays do not fully recover from the burn test. Moreover, this test, according to the content creator, damaged the oleophobic coating of the device’s screen. Last but not least, the bend test was performed, during which a considerable amount of force was applied to both the front and the rear panels of the smartphone. The Huawei Mate 10 Pro passed this test since there is no visible physical damage observed after the test was conducted.
The Huawei Mate 10 Pro was launched in October 2017 and it is one of the newest flagship smartphone offerings of the Chinese smartphone manufacturer. This handset is powered by the Kirin 970 chipset, and it sports a 6-inch AMOLED display that is compliant with the HDR10 standard.
