Sony has scheduled an event for February 26 at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018 with the intention of announcing its latest Android flagship(s). A week before the event, Sony Xperia’s Twitter account released a short teaser video that hints at the upcoming handsets and reaffirms their announcement date. Based on the video that can be seen below, Sony might be preparing a device with a curved back or sides, doing away with the boxy design its flagships have sported for a years now. At the event, Sony is expected to announce three smartphones – Xperia XZ2, Xperia XZ2 Pro, and the Xperia XZ2 Compact – meant to succeed its Xperia XZ1 series from 2017.
A couple of weeks back, Sony filed a dismissal request for one of its grants with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to incorporate some design changes into one of its upcoming devices. Due to the proximity of its next product event, the company likely didn’t opt for a major design overhaul of the upcoming Xperia XZ2 or Xperia XZ2 Pro. Some recent reports have also suggested that the appearance of the 2018 Sony flagships wouldn’t be changed and the filing could be denoting a minor internal revision. With these new smartphones, Sony is expected to drop its OmniBalance design that has been around for years now and replace it with some more contemporary features like an 18:9 display with thinner bezels and two rear cameras.
The supposed Sony Xperia XZ2 Pro was recently spotted in an HTML benchmark with the model number H8116. The phone is expected to feature a 5.7-inch 4K OLED display with an 18:9 aspect ratio, becoming the world’s first smartphone to blend such a high resolution with an elongated image format. Likewise, while mobile 4K LCD displays have been employed by Sony in the past, an OLED module with the same resolution would be a first for the company and the industry. The Xperia XZ2 Pro is rumored to have 6GB of RAM along with 128GB of flash memory and be powered by the Snapdragon 845 processor which is rumored to fuel all of the Xperia XZ2-series smartphones. While the three handsets will reportedly have displays of varying sizes and resolutions, they will maintain the 18:9 aspect ratio along with an IP68 certification for dust and water resistance, as well as dual rear cameras, according to recent reports.
