The world’s first navigation app with high-definition maps is now launching on Android smartphones and select tablets, having been created by Toronto, Canada-based startup Live Roads. The self-titled app boasts lane-level navigation support and HD maps that it combines in an attempt to provide users with a highly accurate and unprecedentedly immersive experience. While 3D vehicle models and HD mapping support are some of the main selling points of Live Roads, the app also delivers a versatile set of tools when it comes to more conventional solutions such as SD maps which it can display simultaneously with their HD counterparts thanks to its picture-in-picture mode. Offline functionality is also part of the package, though the service is presently only available in the United States and Canada.
Live Roads can display customizable 3D vehicles on one’s navigation interface and also allows for simple live location sharing so that users can quickly inform anyone about their whereabouts. The app ships with live traffic reports and bases its suggested routes on that data, ultimately seeking to offer an intuitive navigation solution. Live Roads is launching as both a free and premium app, with the former only supporting HD maps at intersections, whereas the paid software can display them all the time. The service also comes with a robust points system that will allow you to try out the premium version of Live Roads at no charge for an entire month.
Live Roads developers claim existing navigation solutions are inexcusably outdated as they haven’t kept in touch with various advancements in the mobile industry recorded over the last two decades, with their newly announced app being meant to address those issues. The service is compatible with the vast majority of contemporary Android smartphones, with its creators striving to provide users with an unprecedentedly detailed navigation platform meant to disrupt the industry as a whole.
