Facebook has announced a number of new features that would provide more context about articles read by the users of the social media platform. The tech company claims that it considered the feedback and input of publishers and participants of the Facebook Journalism Project in the development of the new features. One of the new features that the social media giant has recently introduced is dubbed “More From This Publisher”, which shows a number of recent stories that have been released by the article’s publisher. On the other hand, the “Shared by Friends” feature informs the user regarding which friends have already shared the article. Among the additional information that the social media giant is providing to readers include the Wikipedia entry of the article’s publisher, articles that report or discuss the same topic, as well as where and how many times the article has been shared on the social media platform. In order to access this information, users may tap on the “About this article” button located near the title of the article.
The social media giant also announced that the company is currently testing a new feature that provides more details about the writer of the article that users are reading. By tapping on the author’s name in Instant Articles, users may access information like the Wikipedia entry of the article’s author as well as some of the recent stories written by the person. Moreover, the company has also included a button that allows readers to follow the page or profile of the article’s author.
Within the last few months, the tech giant has been developing ways to combat the spread of fake news and questionable content on its social media platform. One of the ways that Facebook is implementing to combat fake news is through showing related articles on news stories that have been disproved by independent fact-checking organizations. In addition, the tech firm is also utilizing machine learning algorithms to determine and automatically demote clickbait articles and low-quality content.
