T-Mobile has started rolling out a software package to the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 that would update the handset’s operating system to Android 8.0 Oreo, along with the Samsung Experience 9.0 UI. The carrier has previously announced last Friday, through a tweet made by Desmond Smith, that the major operating system upgrade for the Galaxy Note 8 has been approved and that it could start deploying the software package as early as the night of April 1. Based on several recent replies to Desmond Smith’s tweet, it seems that the carrier has started distributing the update. At least two T-Mobile subscribers have recently shared screenshots on Twitter that shows that their handsets are already receiving the software upgrade.
This software upgrade will bring a number of features to the Galaxy Note 8, including the Picture-in-Picture mode, the notification dots functionality, and the autofill feature. The Picture-in-Picture mode shows two applications at the same time by placing one app in a smaller window on top of another application. Meanwhile, the notification dots feature informs the user on which application has notifications directly on the home screen. In addition, users can also access a selection of quick in-app actions by pressing on the notification dots. The autofill feature, on the other hand, makes it easier for users to log in to websites and applications by remembering important information like usernames and passwords. However, users will have to grant permissions first before they could take advantage of this feature.
It is important to note that the software package is being distributed in phases and it may take several days (or even weeks) before all users receive the major operating system upgrade. Moreover, users should first verify if there is enough free space in the internal flash storage in order to temporarily keep the update, which has a file size of 1.3GB. People should also back up the files and images stored in the handset in order to prevent the loss of important data. The Galaxy Note 8 was launched back in August 2017, and it is powered by the Snapdragon 835 chipset from the semiconductor firm Qualcomm. The handset sports a 6.3-inch Super AMOLED display, and it includes 6GB of RAM and 64GB, 128GB, or 256GB of internal flash storage, which could be expanded using a microSD card. When it launched, the handset originally shipped with Android 7.1.1 Nougat pre-installed.
