The unique Red variant of the Huawei Mate RS Porsche Design is now available for purchase in China, priced at the equivalent of $2,050 for the most premium model, or approximately $1,600 for the version with 256GB of storage space, i.e. half of what the top member of the new Android flagship family is offering. Huawei is justifying the price tag with a number of industry firsts that the Mate RS Porsche Design brings; most notably, the handset boasts two fingerprint readers, one of which is integrated into the display of the device itself, with the other one being mounted on its rear plate. Users are also able to assign one of the two sensors to a separate partition of Android, thus having the ability to e.g. hide their messages and gallery contents behind one scanner while using the other one for activating something akin to a guest mode.
The Mate RS Porsche Design is also said to be the world’s first smartphone featuring a microcapsule PCM aerospace-grade cooling system which Huawei describes as a cutting-edge technology created to ensure the handset is always comfortable to hold regardless of the level of processing strain its hardware is being subjected to. Unlike the newly announced P20 and P20 Pro flagships, the Mate RS Porsche Design has a higher-resolution QHD+ screen with an 18:9 (2:1) aspect ratio and lacks a display notch. The device ships with 6GB of RAM, Android 8.1 Oreo, and the same triple-lens camera setup of the P20 Pro, though its imaging system isn’t situated in the corner of its back panel but is instead centered near the top of the plate.
Select European retailers already started offering the 256GB model of the Mate RS Porsche Design for pre-orders but it’s presently unclear which markets besides China will receive the 512GB version of the device. Huawei already confirmed only the Hyun Black variant of the high-end mobile offering will be sold outside of its home country and the lineup itself will never be officially sold in the United States, much like the P20 series.
