Googleâs Developers Conference 2018 has kicked off, and one of Googleâs first announcements during the Google I/O 2018 keynote is âSmart Composeâ. Now, Smart Compose is actually a new Gmail feature which utilizes AI in order to help you compose e-mails, basically, hence its name. Last year, Google announced âSmart Replyâ, which suggests answers to e-mails youâve received, well, Smart Compose actually takes things further, as it will suggest ends of your sentences as youâre typing, and all youâll be required to do is hit the âtabâ key in order to accept the suggestion.
Now, this is a desktop feature, it will become available in the desktop version of Gmail, regardless of the operating system, as long as youâre using Gmail. So, for example, it can scan your title in order to figure out what youâre writing about, and thanks to that, it can suggest the end of your sentence. For example, if your title is âTaco Tuesdayâ, and you start your e-mail with âHey, are youâ¦â, Google may suggest ââ¦up for some Tacos this Tuesday.â This is just a random example, Smart Compose will be smart enough to figure out quite a few things with help from AI, at least according to Google. If you check out animated image down below, youâll get a better idea as to what it will all look like in practice. Smart Compose will appear in the new Gmail for consumers in the coming weeks, and it will be made available for G Suite customers in the coming months, said Google.
Smart Compose will be available in the ânew Gmailâ, which references Googleâs recent redesign of its desktop Gmail client. Weâve talked about this redesign quite recently, though not everything is using it just yet. Google will switch everyone to the new design in the future, but for now, you have to do it manually if youâd like to start using the ânew Gmailâ. All you have to do is open Googleâs Gmail desktop client, hit the Settings icon in the upper-right corner of the screen, and hit the âTry the new Gmailâ option. You can switch back if you donât like it, by enabling âexperimental accessâ in your settings, and then find an option there, but do keep in mind that the old design will cease to exist at some point.
