Google Introduces AI-Powered 'Smart Compose' Gmail Feature – Google I/O

Google’s Developers Conference 2018 has kicked off, and one of Google’s first announcements during the Google I/O 2018 keynote is “Smart Compose”. Now, Smart Compose is actually a new Gmail feature which utilizes AI in order to help you compose e-mails, basically, hence its name. Last year, Google announced “Smart Reply”, which suggests answers to e-mails you’ve received, well, Smart Compose actually takes things further, as it will suggest ends of your sentences as you’re typing, and all you’ll be required to do is hit the ‘tab’ key in order to accept the suggestion.

Now, this is a desktop feature, it will become available in the desktop version of Gmail, regardless of the operating system, as long as you’re using Gmail. So, for example, it can scan your title in order to figure out what you’re writing about, and thanks to that, it can suggest the end of your sentence. For example, if your title is “Taco Tuesday”, and you start your e-mail with “Hey, are you…”, Google may suggest “…up for some Tacos this Tuesday.” This is just a random example, Smart Compose will be smart enough to figure out quite a few things with help from AI, at least according to Google. If you check out animated image down below, you’ll get a better idea as to what it will all look like in practice. Smart Compose will appear in the new Gmail for consumers in the coming weeks, and it will be made available for G Suite customers in the coming months, said Google.

Smart Compose will be available in the “new Gmail”, which references Google’s recent redesign of its desktop Gmail client. We’ve talked about this redesign quite recently, though not everything is using it just yet. Google will switch everyone to the new design in the future, but for now, you have to do it manually if you’d like to start using the “new Gmail”. All you have to do is open Google’s Gmail desktop client, hit the Settings icon in the upper-right corner of the screen, and hit the “Try the new Gmail” option. You can switch back if you don’t like it, by enabling “experimental access” in your settings, and then find an option there, but do keep in mind that the old design will cease to exist at some point.
