An LG Electronics-made wearable identified by the model number LM-W315 was certified by the United States Federal Communications Commission on Monday, with the device in question possibly being the upcoming Watch Timepiece hybrid meant to combine a touchscreen with mechanical clock arms. The product doesn’t have a physical label and instead ships with an electronic one, with LG’s description of how to access it revealing its Settings screen whose design is identical to that of Wear OS, the rebranded version of Google’s Android Wear operating system.
The LG Watch Timepiece will be the company’s first smartwatch to run Android Wear out of the box and won’t have cellular capabilities, according to information obtained by AndroidHeadlines last month. The newly unveiled FCC certificate only mentions Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n compatibility in terms of connectivity, hence effectively confirming the LM-W315 can’t communicate via 4G LTE or any other wireless standard as the federal regulator would have tested its ability to do so otherwise. The South Korean tech giant’s last two wearables came in the form of the LG Watch Style (LM-W270) and LG Watch Sport (LM-W280) announced fifteen months ago, with the two still being considered some of the best Android Wear, i.e. Wear OS devices on the market.
Its hybrid design aside, the LG Watch Timepiece will be a mid-range offering in the smartwatch segment as it will lack NFC and GPS capabilities, as well as a heart rate monitor, AndroidHeadlines has learned. What it will offer is a stainless steel body with IP68-certified resistance to dust particles and water submersion, as well as a circular 1.2-inch LCD panel with a resolution of 360 by 360 pixels. Qualcomm’s quad-core Snapdragon 2100 chip will also be part of the package, running at 1.1GHz, together with 768MB of LPDDR3 RAM and 4GB of eMMC storage. The Seoul-based company is expected to launch its next wearable in the coming weeks and offer it in at least two color options – New Aurora Black and Cloud Silver.
