Xiaomi has just shared a new teaser image via its official Weibo (Chinese social network) page, and as you can see, that image basically consists purely out of a huge letter “S”. Xiaomi really did not share any additional info, but this teaser is almost certainly hinting at a launch of the Redmi S2 smartphone, or the Surge S2 SoC, maybe even both. The Redmi S2 had been certified recently by both TENAA (China’s equivalent to the FCC), and 3C authority, while the Surge S2 is rumored to arrive soon, and that is Xiaomi’s in-house SoC, in case you were not aware.
Having said that, Xiaomi usually teases upcoming Redmi-branded smartphones via its ‘Redmi’ Weibo account, not its main account, so that creates a bit of confusion here, but if the company is teasing the arrival of both products (which is not likely as Xiaomi mentions ‘product’, not ‘products’), then that explains why it used the its main Weibo account. In any case, the Redmi S2 smartphone will be made out of metal, while it will resemble a number of other Xiaomi-branded smartphones that were introduced earlier this year. The phone’s bezels won’t be too thick, and the device will include a rear-facing fingerprint scanner, and a vertically-aligned dual camera setup. The Redmi S2 actually surfaced in real-life images quite recently, in case you’d like to take a closer look at it. The phone will sport a 5.99-inch HD+ (1440 x 720) display, while it will pack in 2GB, 3GB or 4GB of RAM, depending on the variant. The phone will be fueled by the Snapdragon 625 64-bit octa-core SoC, and it will ship with Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box, with Xiaomi’s MIUI 9 skin.
The Surge S2 is rumored to be a 16nm 64-bit octa-core processor, which consists out of four Cortex-A73 cores clocked at 2.2GHz, and four Cortex-A53 cores running at 1.8GHz. That chip is rumored to arrive with the Mali G71 MP8 GPU, and it will supports LPDDR4 RAM. The Surge S2 is rumored to be on the same level of performance as the Kirin 960, which was Huawei’s chip for 2016 and most of 2017. Xiaomi did not list an announcement date on a teaser image, so we’re not sure when will the event take place, but we’re guessing it’s coming soon.
