Sony’s Xperia XZ2 Android flagship is now available for purchase in Canada, having been brought to the country by Freedom Mobile and Bell, priced at $1,000 CAD, or just under $770 USD. The handset is hence almost 20-percent more expensive compared to how much its unlocked variant is going for in the United States, which is in line with traditional pricing differences of consumer electronics between the two countries. A number of The Source outlets in Canada will also start retailing the Xperia XZ2 in the coming days, with local consumers only being able to purchase the handset in Liquid Black for the time being. It’s presently unclear whether Sony has any plans to bring the Liquid Silver and Deep Green options to the country as well, with its previous product practices being inconsistent when it comes to the global availability of particular Xperia flagship colors.
Besides buying the device outright, Freedom Mobile customers are able to get their hands on the Xperia XZ2 along with MyTab $20 and MyTab $50 plans, with both options requiring no upfront payments. Bell is offering the Android-powered device from $299 upwards, with its subscribers also being able to save up to $200 with an eligible trade-in, though that particular promotion will only run until June 30. The release of the device comes shortly after its smaller counterpart — the Xperia XZ2 Compact — already debuted in Canada, being retailed by a number of carriers like Videotron, as well as Sony Mobile itself.
The Xperia XZ2 lineup has been received with relatively positive reviews from both critics and consumers alike, with the market-wide consensus being that Sony managed to deliver a pair of flagships with extremely capable cameras and consistent battery life. Outside of Google’s Pixel lineup, Sony remains the only major company that’s still catering to consumers interested in ultra-premium smartphones that aren’t phablets, though the firm’s mobile business continues to struggle, having lost $250 million over its 2017 fiscal year.
