Samsung has started rolling out a software package that installs Android 8.0 Oreo to the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge sold in Germany, Belgium, and Spain. Regarding Spain, only Vodafone-branded units are currently receiving the update. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge sold in Canada will receive the operating system upgrade starting with June 11. The development comes two weeks after the South Korean tech giant resumed the deployment of the new firmware. The rollout of the software update was temporarily suspended due to reports of device bootloops, although it was quickly resolved by the device maker.
Upon upgrading their handsets to Android 8.0 Oreo, users of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge will now be able to take advantage of features like the Picture-in-Picture mode, notification dots, and improved autofill framework. The Picture-in-Picture mode allows people to view two applications at the same time by showing one app in a smaller window that is placed on top of another application. Aside from the upgraded version of Google’s operating system, the new software package also brings an updated version of the device maker’s proprietary Android implementation, Samsung Experience 9.0, to the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge.
The South Korean tech giant is informing users that they may have to separately update a number of pre-installed Samsung apps before installing the operating system upgrade. Among the apps that users may have to update separately are Samsung Pay, Samsung Internet, Samsung Notes, and E-mail. Moreover, it is recommended that users back up all files stored on the handset to prevent loss of important data and they should also check if there is enough free space in the flash storage to temporarily keep the update file, which has a size of 1.27GB. Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) units sold in Canada will also receive the Android 8.0 Oreo update starting with June 11.
