The LG G7 ThinQ ticks almost all the spec boxes for what we expect out of a 2018 flagship, but it goes out of its way to do something entirely unconventional that we didn’t expect: it brings the boombox back. LG has indeed equipped the G7 ThinQ with what it calls a Boombox Speaker, built right into the chassis of the phone itself. While this boombox speaker makes the phone a tad bit thicker than the comparable LG V30, the results are certainly worth the extra thickness when placed on a table. The boombox speaker is called such because it resonates not only inside the chassis, but also through the surface you’ve placed it on, so results will vary depending on what that surface is made of.
Outside of an enhanced audio experience, you’ll be getting the thinnest bezels on any LG phone to date, although there is a notch up top to house the front-facing camera, speaker and other sensors. LG has swapped the OLED from the V30 out with a brand new technology in mobile called M+ LCD. While LCD is by no means new technology, LG’s implementation of an RGBW pixel striping configuration is something we’ve only seen on LG’s LCD TVs so far, and creates one of the absolute brightest displays on the market. At 1,000 nits of sustained brightness, the LG G7 ThinQ is able to keep an ultra-bright display for up to 3 minutes before toning it down, meaning you can get a quick brightness boost when needed without feeling rushed.
The rest of the internals are all mostly upgraded too, including a faster Snapdragon 845 SoC, 4GB of LPDDR4x RAM, 64GB of internal storage, and a 3,000mAh battery. LG will also be selling a version of the G7 ThinQ with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage in some markets, and you can pre-order the phone in most markets right now.
