DxOMark Gives Mixed Rating To Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra Camera

Established French benchmarking company DxOMark Image Labs on Wednesday published its scientific review of the 23-megapixel (f/2.0) camera setup found on the back of Sony’s Xperia XA2 Ultra, the Japanese tech giant’s latest Android mid-rangers launched in early 2018. The firm rated its imaging capabilities as decent but not much more, concluding it delivers highly mixed results and awarding it an ultimate score of 75 on its non-finite scale. That puts the Xperia XA2 Ultra’s camera just above the performance of the Nexus 6P and Apple’s iPhone 6 released in 2015 and 2014, respectively. For added context, Huawei’s P20 Pro, a device that DxOMark rates as presently the best mobile camera setup in the world, scored 109 after being subjected to the same tests earlier this year.

Following extensive testing, the company concluded Sony’s Android mid-ranger is generally capable at delivering accurate exposures, especially if not being stress-tested in poor lighting conditions, but found that it struggles in high-contrast scenes and has some issues with color accuracy which are most evident by the fact that it occasionally captures blue skies as being somewhat cyan. While it does much better with most other colors, it can also be inconsistent in this segment, depending on the lighting conditions and color variety its single-lens camera is exposed to. Its video-taking capabilities have been rated as similarly inconsistent in terms of performance and while they were more consistent in terms of color accuracy, they struggled with texture details in a much more obvious manner.

Ultimately, the Xperia XA2 Ultra can’t compare to any higher-priced smartphone that’s currently available for purchase but does well against most of its rivals in the mid-range price bracket and outright outperforms some of them such as Motorola’s Moto G5S and the Meizu Pro 7 Plus, DxOMark concluded. Sony‘s Android mid-ranger is presently available for purchase on a global level, priced at approximately $400 unlocked, depending on the market.
