Spotify has decided to join the likes of Facebook, Instagram, and Uber by releasing its very own ‘Lite’ app. Spotify Lite is now available in the Google Play Store and weighs only 15MB, compared to the company’s main app which is close to 100MB. As many of you already know, Instagram launched ‘Instagram Lite’ just a couple of days ago, while Facebook Lite, Messenger Lite, and Uber Lite have been available for quite some time now.
Needless to say, Spotify Lite is made for less powerful devices, and the app is actually missing some rather important functionality compared to the main version of the app. The app looks rather similar to Spotify in terms of the design, but it doesn’t have offline playback, for example, which many of you probably use and consider to be a rather important feature. Now, saving data should be this app’s main focus, as is for Facebook Lite and Messenger Lite, for example, so the omission of offline playback is rather odd. That’s not the only thing missing, though, as the app is also missing ‘Spotify Connect’, which is a feature which allows audio to be streamed through various audio devices. On top of that, extreme quality playback is also not included in this app, which actually makes sense in a way. That’s not all, though, as Premium subscribers can’t choose specific songs to play, and that applies to playlists. In other words, if you’re Premium user, it may be best to stick with the regular Spotify app.
Having said that, this app is not available to all smartphones at the moment, it seems to be limited to only some devices / regions, but as Spotify did not share a press release yet, we’re not sure what regions and / or what device specifications. It is possible that your phone needs to have 1GB or less RAM to install this app, or something of the sort, but we’re only guessing.
