Dark Mode Coming To Phone App For Pixel & Android One Phones

Google has quietly updated the changelog on the Play Store for its dialer app for Android devices simply called Phone, announcing the upcoming addition of a dark mode to the app. The soon-to-come dark mode is part of a redesign that the Mountain View, California-based tech giant plans to roll out to the dialer app soon, along with a host of bug fixes and improvements.

While the latest changelog for the Google Phone app on the Play Store confirms the upcoming arrival of the dark user interface (UI) on the app, it remains unclear when this will actually happen. The dark mode is expected, nonetheless, to land on Google’s Pixel range of smartphones, Android One devices, and the Essential phones. Earlier this month, the app received a Material Theme makeover in beta, which basically added a white background to it. For the uninitiated, the Google Phone app is the search giant’s proprietary app with a native support for Google Duo video calling. The app also works to warn users about possible spam calls and it raises the flag against these kinds of calls to curb the spread of unwanted commercial calls. Then last month, the Google Phone app received an update that allows users to filter spam calls. The feature is turned on by default. Additionally, the app displays the identity of the caller so that users have an idea about who is calling them before picking up the call. There is an option as well to filter calls you do not wish to receive by adding those unwanted numbers to the app’s block list. Other features of the app include the visual voicemail, nearby places, and mini call view.

The upcoming change to the Google Phone app represents Google’s much broader effort to align all of its products and services with one another. For example, Google just rolled out a dark mode to the Android Messages app most recently, but not without pulling that update previously after adding the new design to that app in the middle of this month. As the update to the Google Phone app is currently pending release, Android users can expect it to arrive in the coming days.
