It seems like Samsung is planning to release a new member of the Galaxy A series, the Galaxy A8s, and that phone will have a rather interesting design. During the Galaxy A9s and A6s announcement event, Samsung’s spokesperson actually teased the arrival of the Galaxy A8s, suggesting that it will sport a camera hole in the display, instead of a display notch (featured image is just a placeholder image, it does not show the device itself). The company’s spokesperson did not share any additional info about the device, so the phone itself is quite a mystery for now, save for the display camera display we’ve mentioned, of course. The Galaxy A8s will sport mid-range specifications, though, but it will belong in the upper-mid-range sector, though, as did its predecessor. The Galaxy A9s is fueled by the Snapdragon 660 64-bit octa-core SoC, and the Galaxy A8s will probably utilize that very same processor, if not the Snapdragon 710, as it was mentioned recently that the company is working on a Galaxy A series smartphone that will come with that SoC.
Background: Samsung is experimenting with its Galaxy A series, that’s for sure, the Galaxy A7 was announced quite recently with three rear-facing cameras, while the Galaxy A9 followed with four rear-facing cameras. The Galaxy A7 managed to become the very first smartphone from Samsung to sport three cameras, while the Galaxy A9 became the world’s first smartphone with four cameras, so this camera cutout in the display on the Galaxy A8s would not exactly be surprising considering how much Samsung is experimenting with its Galaxy A lineup of devices. Aside from that camera cutout, the Galaxy A8s would also ship with extremely thin bezel, it will probably be almost completely bezel-less, save for a very thin ‘chin’ below the display. Having said that, this is not the first time we’re hearing about a camera cutout in the display, as the OPPO R19 did leak quite recently, and it sports such a camera. It remains to be seen how accurate is that leak, though, as it’s possible that it’s fake, but if it’s real, that is probably what the OnePlus 7 will look like once it becomes official next year.
Impact: It is still unclear when will the Galaxy A8s become official, but it seems like it may launch in the near future. Is this the indication what the Galaxy S10 will look like? Will it sport a camera cutout in the display in order to avoid having a display notch? Well, it is possible, but take that with a grain of salt, as not much Galaxy S10 details leaked out just yet, especially not when it comes to the phone’s design. The Galaxy S10 series is expected to arrive in the first quarter of next year, and Samsung is expected to step away from its current S line design a bit, as it’s expected to refresh that design language to a degree… and that is where the display camera cutout may come into play, so that the company can trim down bezels even further, and at the same time offer a brand new design to its consumers, but we’ll see what will happen, as Galaxy S10 design leaks are expecting to come pouring soon.
