The Lenovo-made Moto G7 Play has now cropped up in real life photos at the FCC alongside quite a few details about the supported carrier bands and hardware. The device will feature two different SIM variants, each with the option to expand storage via microSD card. Judging by the images and the included user-manual detailing the front-facing exterior details of the handset, the notch at the front of the Play edition is much more pronounced, taking up around half of the front of the device. Connections will be available over GSM at 850MHz and 1900MHz while WCDMA will support bands 2, 4, and 5. On the LTE side of the equation, the Moto G7 Play will support both FDD and TDD on bands 2, 4, 5, 7 37, and 41. Wi-Fi support includes just the 2.4GHz band and Bluetooth 4.2 is present for local connections. FM radio transmissions are also shown to be supported, most likely linked to the included 3.5mm headphone jack.
The images showing the internal hardware also seem to point to the use of a Snapdragon 632 SoC, which would be coupled with an Adreno 506 on the graphics side. The battery powering that is shown as being rated at 3,000mAh and charges via USB Type-C cable along the bottom edge. On the outside, the handset is shown in two colors including a silvery blue or gray and a solid black configuration. A single camera sensor can be spotted on both front and back. On the front, that sits opposite an LED flash while the flash on the rear panel resides below the snapper. A fingerprint scanner is embedded just below that with the trademark ‘M’ logo etched over top. The FCC documentation designates this smartphone with the model number XT1965-2.
Background: Previous leaks had indicated that Lenovo would be releasing no fewer than four variations of its Moto G7 this year following a decision to cut its Moto C, Moto M, and Moto X families. These recently listed Mogo G7 Play devices, both dual and single SIM configurations would represent just one of those. Both likely represent the entry-level models but a ‘mid-range’ model, the Moto G7, was also recently spotted at the regulatory agency.
Listed as model number XT1965-2, that handset varied substantially from the Play version starting with the carrier bands supported. LTE networks running on bands 2, 4, 5, 7, 12, 17, and 66 were shown to be supported, indicating availability on T-Mobile and AT&T. The headphone jack was placed on the bottom edge rather than the top and although this handset appears to be fashioned of plastic, the Moto G7 looked like it was fashioned from glass and metal. Finally, the notch at the top of that other handset’s display was a comparatively minuscule teardrop style cutout. Internally, the Moto G7 has also been rumored to be powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 630 SoC running at 2.2GHz backed by 6GB RAM and a 3200mAh battery.
Impact: The Moto G7 Play’s appearance at the FCC seems to indicate that at least two models of the device are headed to US carriers, each with either dual SIM or single SIM options. Lenovo has historically ensured support for every major provider but it isn’t immediately clear whether the company is doing so this time around. The listings seem to indicate that the OEM will be shifting to support only GSM mobile carriers. Regardless, the devices respective appearances at the FCC does at least imply that the handsets are getting close to launch.
