Leaked images of the chassis of the Samsung Galaxy A50 supplies a glimpse on the design of the upcoming mid-range handset offering from Samsung Electronics. The photographs of the smartphone frame suggest that the Galaxy A50 will feature the Infinity-V design language, a display concept that Samsung used with the entry-level Galaxy M10 and the Galaxy M20. The Galaxy A50 will feature a waterdrop notch that houses a single front-facing camera. Meanwhile, the leak also provided an image of the rear frame of the device, and the photograph shows an elongated cutout near the upper left-hand corner of the smartphone that could fit the three rear cameras of the handset. Directly below the cutout for the rear shooters is a smaller hole that may accommodate the LED flash. On the other hand, another image shows that the bottom of the handset will contain the USB Type-C port and a 3.5-millimeter headphone jack.
Background: Until the recent leak, there is little information available about the design of the Galaxy A50. However, several rumors already detailed the specifications of the Galaxy A50. According to a benchmark result, the Galaxy A50 will sport the Exynos 9610 SoC. This chipset includes four ARM Cortex A73 CPU cores running at a maximum clock speed of 2.3GHz, four ARM Cortex A53 CPU cores clocked at up to 1.6GHz, and the Mali-G72 GPU. This SoC also features improved facial recognition and depth sensing technologies. The handset will contain 4GB of RAM and there will likely be two hardware variants of the Galaxy A50 that differ primarily in the capacity of the internal flash storage. One of the models may feature 64GB of internal storage, while the other unit could include 128GB of flash storage. Recent reports also show that the Galaxy A50 will have five color options, namely blue, black, pink, silver, and white.
Another report mentions that the single front-facing camera of the Galaxy A50 will come with a 24-megapixel sensor, while a 4,000mAh battery will power the device. The handset may also feature a dual SIM card slot, which allows the smartphone to connect to two different cellular networks simultaneously. Furthermore, recent rumors also indicate that the Galaxy A series handsets, including the Galaxy A50, will ship with 3D imaging functionalities made possible by the device’s time-of-flight (ToF) sensor. Moreover, it is likely that the Galaxy A50 will ship with Android 9 Pie pre-installed, although Samsung’s proprietary skin, One UI, will run on top of Google’s operating system. This software overlay features a system-wide dark mode and a redesigned user interface that divides the screen into viewing and interaction areas. The revamped UI enables people to use the large displays of their smartphones better and more easily.
Impact: The leaked images of the smartphone’s chassis suggests that the Galaxy A50 will feature design and specifications usually found in more premium devices, an example being the triple rear camera setup of the handset. Aside from the Galaxy A50, other devices that Samsung will likely ship under the Galaxy A lineup include the Galaxy A10, A30, A40, A70, and A90. More details about these devices will appear as the handsets’ launch draws near, and in the case of the Galaxy A50, Samsung will likely release the device in the first half of 2019.
