Documents submitted by Samsung Electronics to the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) include a schematic of the back panel of a tablet identified by the model number SM-P205.
Earlier reports indicate that Samsung will market this device as part of its mid-range Galaxy Tab A lineup. The schematic shows the single rear camera of the tablet placed at the upper left-hand corner of the device’s back panel. Meanwhile, the bottom of the tablet houses the headphone jack, the USB Type-C port for charging and data transfer, and grills for the loudspeaker. Users may also find the power button and the volume rocker on the left side of the device.
The test report submitted by the South Korean tech giant to the FCC also suggests that the tablet will at least have a variant that may accept SIM cards and can connect to mobile networks. According to the presented documents, the variant of the SM-P205 certified by the FCC is compatible with 2G GSM, 3G WCDMA, LTE-FDD, and LTE-TDD networks.
The test report also shows that the device is compatible with Wi-Fi networks running on 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies and that the tablet features support for both Bluetooth connectivity and GPS.
Previous rumors suggest that the base variant of the SM-P205 will have an internal storage capacity of 32GB, although it is likely that the tablet will also be available in models with larger storage options. Furthermore, reports indicate Samsung will also sell two color options of the product, namely black and gray.
This tablet will likely become a part of Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Tab A lineup. Samsung previously launched Galaxy Tab A devices with 7.0-inch and 10.5-inch displays, and it is likely that the tablet will have either one of the two screen sizes. Like previous Galaxy Tab A products, this upcoming tablet may sport a mid-range chipset. For example, the Galaxy Tab A 10.5 (2018) featured the Snapdragon 450 SoC.
Furthermore, like its predecessors, the SM-P205 may sport an LCD display to reduce production costs, and its screen may have an aspect ratio of 16:10. Some of the software features present in previous Galaxy Tab A devices may also appear with SM-P205, which include SmartThings support, Samsung Kids, and the Multi-User Mode.
Aside from the SM-P205, rumors and benchmark results suggest Samsung will also launch several other tablets within the next few months. Another rumored Galaxy Tab A device, identified by the model number SM-P200, is reportedly in the works. Other tablets that Samsung is developing include the SM-T720 and SM-T725, which the manufacturer may launch as a part of the same device brand, and the SM-T515, which sports the Exynos 7885 chipset and 2GB of RAM.
Earlier reports show that Samsung is preparing a wide range of mid-range tablet offerings which may include features that cater to families and younger individuals. Focusing on the mid-range segment of the market while still producing flagship devices that cater to the more affluent consumers enables the South Korean tech giant to sell substantial volumes of tablets, allowing the company to keep its dominant position in the Android tablet market despite the continuing decline in the overall number of units sold.
