Xperia XA3 Leaked Images Confirm Sony's Bet On Very Tall Displays

The upcoming Sony Xperia XA3 has surfaced online via new leaked renders that seems to confirm the employment of an atypical display. That is, the display is going to be a very tall display compared to what else is currently on the market.

According to the report that released the images, the display is going to arrive with a 21:9 aspect ratio which would mark quite a deviation from an aspect ratio that hovers around 18:9, that’s used by a number of companies at the moment.

It is expected, the increased, or taller, display will make the Xperia XA3 far more suitable for those looking for a heightened video-watching experience, although it remains to be seen what the give will be for a display like this.

If nothing else, it seems likely many will find the aspect ratio a little too strange in terms of comfort and usability outside of watching videos.

Besides the images and the aspect ratio, the report was not able to provide any additional information beyond what has already been reported on the Xperia XA3 other than suggesting the unique display will likely result in a 2560 x 1080 resolution.

This contradicts earlier rumors that suggested the resolution on the Xperia XA3 (and the Xperia XA3 Plus) will be 1920 by 1080 pixels. Although that same report also pointed out a more traditional 16:9 aspect ratio as well, and this in itself also contradicted even earlier rumors that pointed to the adoption of an 18:9 aspect ratio.

If these latest images and information is accurate, then it would seem those previous report are likely to have been wrong.

The Sony Xperia XA3, along with the XA3 Plus are expected to be joined by the Sony Xperia XZ4 when Sony takes to the stage during this year’s MWC 2019 event. One thing to note is that as Sony is expected to launch more than one variant of this phone, there’s no guarantee the one show off here is actually the standard model. It could also easily be the Plus, Ultra, or any other variant Sony has in the works.

Either way, if all the current reports are to be believed then there may be an interesting similarity between the Sony Xperia XA3 and the Sony Xperia XZ4.

Just earlier today a Sony trademark filing was spotted for “CinemaWide Display” and came with the suggestion this will likely be the marketing name used by Sony for the Xperia XZ4. One that would highlight the use of the wide display (when in landscape) mode for a better viewing experience.

If that trademark was indeed in reference to the Xperia XZ4, then it would seem almost a given that the CinemaWide Display marketing will also be in use with the Xperia XA3, as both now seem highly likely to arrive equipped with the same 21:9 aspect ratio.

This in itself means that although this is a fairly unusual aspect ratio by current market standards, Sony might not be taking a single device approach, but instead might be looking to make it a feature that’s specifically associated with its line of phones.

Whether or not that proves to be a good move in terms of the popularity or sales, it should at the very least help Sony’s 2019 smartphones to stand out a little more during what will be a hole-punch year for the industry in general.
