Samsung will reportedly launch the Galaxy A40 mid-range smartphone in Europe for the price of €249 ($282), according to sources cited by MySmartPrice in a recent report. The device will apparently land on European shelves “soon” yet no exact launch date was given, but the smartphone has already been certified by Bluetooth SIG on March 1, so its market release does seem imminent.
The Samsung Galaxy A40 was also spotted in a Geekbench listing back in January which means that some testing has been done on the phone in preparation of its eventual release. Spec-wise, the unit fits between the Galaxy A30 and Galaxy A50, both of which have already been launched in India a couple of days ago.
According to preliminary specifications, the Samsung Galaxy A40 should rely on the Exynos 7885 chipset based on two ARM Cortex-A73 cores clocked at up to 2.2GHz along with six Cortex-A53 cores operating at a maximum frequency of 1.6GHz. The CPU is coupled with an ARM Mali-G72 MP2 (dual-core) graphics chip and 4GB of RAM.
Details about the display are missing but both the Samsung Galaxy A30 and Galaxy A50 feature the same panel, i.e. a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED Infinity-U screen with a resolution of 2340 x 1080, and as such it’s likely that the Galaxy A40 won’t break the mold and will share this characteristic with its two close siblings.
Likewise, both the Galaxy A30 and Galaxy A50 are powered by a 4,000mAh battery each so there’s no reason to believe the Galaxy A40 will offer a different battery capacity. But there are some key differences between the two aforementioned models and it remains to be seen if the upcoming Galaxy A40 will lean more towards the lower-cost Galaxy A30 or the slightly more ambitious Galaxy A50.
The former has a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner and two rear-facing cameras, whereas the latter has three main cameras on the back and adopts an in-display fingerprint sensor. Additionally, the Galaxy A30 has less RAM and built-in storage at up to 64GB, while the Galaxy A50 doubles the storage and can be acquired with up to 6GB of RAM as opposed to 4GB.
The Samsung Galaxy A series is the OEM’s new budget-oriented range, covering both the lower-end segment with the Galaxy A10, as well as the mid-range portion of the market with the Galaxy A30 and Galaxy A50 duo. The upcoming Galaxy A40 seems to lean more towards the mid-range market as indicated by the alleged €249 ($282) price tag in Europe, and the moniker itself.
For reference, the Galax A30 in India has a starting price of Rs. 16,990 (€211 / $239) whereas the Galaxy A50 debuted for the starting price of Rs. 19,990 (€248 / $282) and can go as high as Rs. 22,990 (€286 / $324). Having said that, it’s unclear whether the €249 price attached to the Galaxy A40 represents the lowest or highest point depending on the hardware configuration, or the average price.
The entire new series runs Android 9 Pie out of the box, meaning that it should also include the new One UI which replaced Samsung Experience late last year. The lineup seems to have been created as a replacement for Samsung’s previous mid-range series including the Galaxy On/Galaxy J.
