The Xiaomi Mi 9 is the company’s newest flagship handset which was announced quite recently, and considering its value, many of you are probably wondering how durable is this handset. Well, the Xiaomi Mi 9 durability test surfaced on the JerryRigEverything YouTube channel, and those of you who would like to know more either fire up the video that is embedded down below, or read on.
This durability test starts with a display scratch test. The phone’s display managed to get scratched with a level six pick, while a level seven pick left deeper scratches on it. The Xiaomi Mi 9 comes with the Gorilla Glass 6 on top of its display, and such scratch test results were expected.
The phone’s front-facing camera, which is placed inside a waterdrop notch, is also covered in Gorilla Glass 6, while the speaker which sits above is covered by a piece of metal which sits firmly in place. It is also worth noting that there is a thin layer of plastic placed between the phone’s display and its metal frame, for shock absorption, which is always a good idea.
The Xiaomi Mi 9’s metal frame is made out of 7000 series anodized aluminum, while its physical keys are made out of metal as well. A piece of rubber which is placed inside the SIM card slot is not exactly great, which is not surprising considering that the phone does not sport an official IP rating.
The phone’s camera lenses are protected by “sapphire glass”, as Xiaomi refers to it, though this is not sapphire crystal, as it does get scratched with a level six pick, while sapphire crystal would get scratched with a level eight pick. All in all, it’s a solid camera lens protection, but not sapphire crystal protection as some may have expected. Interestingly enough, a test conducted by the source shows that Xiaomi is actually using sapphire for camera lens protection, so the company may have combined sapphire with glass, or something of the sort.
The phone’s in-display fingerprint scanner, which is of an optical kind, works like normal when you scratch that part of the display, it didn’t have any issues in that regard, even after some serious scratches. The phone’s fullHD+ AMOLED display managed to resist flame for about 30 seconds before the display turned white, but the pixels recovered soon after.
The Xiaomi Mi 9 is extremely thin, but it managed to survive the bend test without a problem. The source first tried to bend it from the back, and then from the front. The phone did flex a bit in both instances, but it reverted back to its original state, while nothing popped up, or anything of the sort.
There you have it, the Xiaomi Mi 9 did really well in this durability test, and as far as its build quality is concerned, there seems to be nothing to worry about. The video itself has a duration of about seven minutes, and if you’re interested in watching it, it is embedded down below for your convenience.
