Flashy OnePlus Color Variants Not Selling All That Well: CEO

According to a report from My Drivers, A Chinese news outlet, Pete Lau had some interesting things to say regarding sales of OnePlus’ smartphones. The source claims that Pete Lau made such comments on Weibo (Chinese social network), though the original source has not been provided.

In any case, Pete Lau is OnePlus’ CEO and co-founder, as most of you know, and according to him, “fancy” color variants are not selling as well as expected. The OnePlus 6 and 6T sales have been doing great for the company, but it seems like “regular” colors are selling way better than the “fancy” ones.

This would suggest that the Mirror Black and Midnight Black variants are by far the best selling variants, though only the Mirror Black model comes in a 6GB RAM variants, while both phones are available in 8GB RAM options, that goes for both the OnePlus 6 and 6T, as we’re assuming that Pete Lau’s comments are connected to both devices.

The OnePlus 6 was announced in Red and White colors, in addition to the two aforementioned units, while the OnePlus 6T is also available in a Thunder Purple variant. Mr. Lau said that such color options look great during press conferences, while the same can be said for reviews, various video content, and so on, but it seems like consumers are most interested in “regular” options.

“Fancy” color options have managed to become a trend in the last year or so, as many companies have started releasing smartphones with flashy colors, while gradient options also became a trend, options like the Thunder Purple OnePlus 6T. Pete Lau did not really give out any specific info in terms of sales, to make us better understand what he is talking about, but his comments did suggest that the OnePlus 7 series may not be available in as many color variants as the OnePlus 6 and 6T were, not that those two phones came in a ton of options.

It is safe to assume that OnePlus will still offer a color variant that is not Black, as the White OnePlus 7 will probably be a thing, and at some point, a flashy color variant may also become a reality, Red or Purple unit. We’re only guessing, of course, we’ll have to wait and see what will happen, as per usual.

The OnePlus 7 is expected to arrive next month, and if a recent leak is to be believed, be may actually see three variants of the device, the OnePlus 7, 7 Pro, and 7 Pro 5G. The OnePlus 7 Pro will sport a slightly larger display than the OnePlus 7, and its display will be curved, at least if a recent leak is to be believed.

The OnePlus 7 will be fueled by the Snapdragon 855 64-bit octa-core processor, no matter what variant we’re talking about, while the device will ship with Android 9 Pie, and the company’s OxygenOS Android overlay. Three cameras will be included on the back of the OnePlus 7, while the phone will once again sport an in-display fingerprint scanner, quite probably an optical unit like the OnePlus 6T. All OnePlus 7 variants will include large batteries, and will support Warp Charge fast charging.
