Google’s main goal with its Home products and Google Assistant, is to make your life easier. And so that users will use Google Assistant to do anything and everything. That includes putting your phone in Do Not Disturb mode. So now if you have a Google Home, you can ask the Assistant to put your phone in Do Not Disturb mode. It’s unclear why anyone would really need to use this, as it is definitely easier to just hit the toggle in the quick settings on your phone, but it is a nifty feature to have.
Before we get started with how to use Google Home to put your phone in Do Not Disturb, there is a pre-requisite. This is a pretty obvious one, but you are going to need to have your phone and Google Home linked to the same account. So for instance, if you are looking to mute your significant others’ phone, it’ll need to be on the same account as your Google Home.
How to mute your smartphone with Google Home
Now that’s out of the way, using Google Home to mute your device is very simple.
Simply say “OK Google, mute my phone”.
Now your phone is going to be in Do Not Disturb mode until you take it out of that mode.
That command will only work if there is one device connected to your account. Otherwise, you will need to specify which phone you want to mute or silence. Something like, “OK Google, silence my Galaxy S10+” will put it into Do Not Disturb. You can also use commands like “Turn on Do Not Disturb on my phone”, or “Enable Do Not Disturb on my phone”, etc. Or really any variation of those commands.
Google does allow users to take their phone out of Do Not Disturb with Google Home too. Simply say the opposite, like “Hey Google, turn off Do Not Disturb on my Pixel 3 XL” and it’ll turn off Do Not Disturb mode.
Wrap Up
This is one of those very simple features that most people won’t even know about, sadly. It’s a feature that is going to be very useful for a lot of people though. Say you’re going to bed and don’t want anyone to wake you up while you’re asleep. You can tell the Google Assistant to put your phone on Do Not Disturb for the night, and then take it off of Do Not Disturb when you wake up.
Google Assistant has been gaining a ton of very useful features over the past couple years. Some of which are smaller features, and ones that aren’t very well-known. But these days, the Google Assistant can do virtually anything for you. For a while, it was struggling, and far behind Amazon Alexa, but now it definitely looks like it is well ahead of Alexa. Though, that is partially because Google Assistant has a search engine behind it that can help it answer questions and stuff, while Alexa does not.
