Samsung’s long-rumored Galaxy A80 has finally been unveiled by the company, showcased as a top-of-the-line mid-range Android smartphone with unique features such as a slide-out selfie camera array and a massive Super AMOLED display panel. The device tracks well with previous leaks and rumors, rounding out the company’s newly refined A-series, following its decision to converge a wide range of gadgets under the marketing umbrella.
The most prominent features on the new gadget include its display panel, set at a whopping 6.7-inches with an FHD+ resolution coming in at 1080 x 2400. For biometrics-based security, Samsung’s placed its fingerprint reader under that screen instead of on the back or side edges. That’s embedded in a design centered around a metal frame sandwiched between 3D glass and the panel takes up almost all of the front half.
There’s no camera on the front either since Samsung has opted to include a new mechanism that utilizes the 48-megapixel-rated triple rear sensor array instead for selfies. That means almost no bezels are needed at all for what Samsung calls its first “New” Infinity panel.
The camera array is comprised of three sensors, from a primary 48-megapixel f/2.0 aperture to an ultra-wide 8-megapixel snapper with a 123-degree field of view and an aperture at f/2.2. The final sensor is a 3D depth sensor and the entire array slides up and away along the top edge before the cameras themselves roll over to face the user. In a way, the Galaxy A80 is both a figurative and literal twist to Samsung’s mobile design philosophy.
On specs and features
The overall design of the Samsung Galaxy A80 is centered around smooth curves and nearly seamless incorporation of the above-mentioned camera. That should make it a comfortable device but Samsung’s also implemented some of its staple features out-of-the-box. That includes its Bixby AI services, activated by either voice or at the touch of a dedicated button, and the latest advances on that front ranging from automation features in Bixby Routines to more standard AI vision and voice actions.
Samsung Knox is incorporated across every level, just as on the company’s flagships and users will have easy access to Samsung Health and Pay services too. AI drives optimizations for battery life and performance across various components via Samsung’s Intelligent Performance Enhancer features. The camera is outfitted with similar enhancements such as Live Focus and Super Steady modes as well as flaw detection and Scene Optimizer features.
For specifications, the Samsung Galaxy A80 is no slouch, matching the expectations of prior leaks. Powering Android 9 Pie is an octa-core processor clocked 2.2GHz for two cores and 1.8GHz for six further cores. The processor is backed up by 8 GB RAM and
128 GB storage, allowing ample room for apps, music, and movies as well as plenty of memory to keep everything running at once.
The 165.2 x 76.5 x 9.3mm frame also houses a reasonable 3,700mAh capacity battery. That notably supports Super Fast Charging protocols at up to 25W.
A few missing details
No details on pricing and availability have been provided but the news was shared via Samsung’s global site so the Galaxy A80 will most likely be available in the South Korean tech giant’s usual markets worldwide. Since the Samsung Galaxy A80 is set toward the upper end of the mid-range in terms of specs, its pricing will likely fall into that same range.
For color options, users can choose between an Angel Gold, Ghost White, and Phantom Black variant. Each of those has accents of Angel Gold around the camera array while some of the reflective aesthetic from Samsung’s newest flagship series gadgets have made their way over too. Namely, the Angel Gold color has hints of reflective pink and Ghost White option incorporates blue hues depending on the lighting.
