How To Improve Battery Life On OnePlus 7 Pro

The OnePlus 7 Pro has a beautiful, 6.67-inch Quad HD+ display with a 90Hz refresh rate. It looks amazing, but it’s going to chew up that precious battery life. Now OnePlus did outfit it with a massive 4000mAh capacity battery, but that still might not be enough for most people.

You should be able to get some pretty good battery life out of the OnePlus 7 Pro – at least enough to last you a full day. But if not, we do have a few tips that can help you extend the battery life, to make it through those longer days.

Enable Dark Mode

OnePlus has been using OLED displays for many years – in fact, it has never not used an OLED panel. And dark mode can really improve battery life on an OLED display. This is because  OLED displays light up each individual pixel. So turning everything black means that there are less pixels being used, and thus less battery life being used whenever you are looking at the display.

Luckily, OnePlus’ dark mode is a blacked out dark mode. So instead of going with darker greys throughout the operating system, it’s all black. Which can really improve the battery life. In our own testing with the OnePlus 7 Pro, battery life drastically improved, compared to leaving it in the standard light mode. We went from getting about four to five hours on screen time, to over six. Of course, your mileage is going to vary.

To enable dark mode, go into Settings, then tap on Display and scroll down to “Theme”. Tap on that, and then tap on “Dark” and it’ll change over to dark mode It’s a complete system dark mode too, which looks really nice.

Adjust the screen resolution

The OnePlus 7 Pro does default to Quad HD+, which is a whole lot of pixels on a pretty large display. That is going to definitely deplete your battery faster than you might want it too. Luckily, you can downgrade the resolution, and take it down to 1080p. While it is a downgrade, it’s not a huge downgrade, as the screen still looks really vibrant and bright.

There is also an option to “Auto Switch” which will automatically switch to the right resolution when needed. This is great for conserving battery life, especially on those longer days.

To adjust the screen resolution, simply jump into Settings and then tap on Display. From there scroll down to “Resolution” and tap on that. Then you can choose the option that best fits your needs.

Reduce the refresh rate to 60Hz

One of the bigger selling points of the OnePlus 7 Pro is that 90Hz display. It makes everything seem so smooth, and once you use it, you aren’t going to want to go back. But if you need more juice, you’re going to need too. Reducing it to 60Hz will make a noticeable difference in your usage, but also in the battery life. You should be able to get a substantial boost in battery life from making this change.

To change the refresh rate, go to Settings and then tap on display. Then scroll down to “Screen Refresh Rate”, it’s right above the “Resolution” option. Then choose either 90Hz or 60Hz.

Check your battery stats for rogue apps

When you think your phone (whether it be a OnePlus 7 Pro or any other phone) has depleted its battery pretty quickly, it’s always a good idea to check the battery stats. This will show you whether an app has been keeping the phone awake, and has gone rogue or not. For instance, last week, the Google app used a ton of battery on the OnePlus 7 Pro for some reason. You can Force Stop it, and that will usually take care of the issue.

If that doesn’t solve the issue, you can also uninstall and reinstall (if its an app you use a lot), to fix the issue.

Wrap Up

Many were worried about the battery life on the OnePlus 7 Pro, with this higher-resolution display, and higher-refresh rate, but truth be told, the 4000mAh capacity battery has done pretty well for us so far. But if you are a heavier user, these tricks will definitely help you out, and get the most out of that battery.
