As the OnePlus 7 series launch date comes closer, the company continues to hype up the products. The Chinese manufacturer is actively teasing the upcoming phones on its Twitter page and per the latest tweet, the OnePlus 7 series would be “Icy Smooth”. What exactly the company is implying is anyone’s guess as the words can have several meanings so the short video clip is something of a cliffhanger.
Unlike the previous years, OnePlus will be launching not one but three phones this time. The first one will be the OnePlus 7, the second one will be the OnePlus 7 Pro, and the last model will be a 5G variant of the Pro handset.
As for what “Icy Smooth” refers too, the best we can do right now is try and decrypt the wording. OnePlus might be teasing the faster performance of its upcoming phones as they are tipped to be fueled by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC.
Interestingly enough, a previous tweet also boasted about the company’s Warp Charger and the logo was presumably plastered on top of a chipset, hinting at some sort of connection. Per a leaked specifications sheet, the OnePlus 7 will pack in a 4,150mAh battery, while the OnePlus 7 Pro will get a 4,000mAh cell and both the devices will support 30W Warp Charge.
There is also a possibility of “Icy Smooth” being a color variant. The phones will reportedly be available in the color options Nebula Blue, Almond, and Mirror Grey, which means “Icy Smooth” could be a white variant.
And lastly, OnePlus could be referring to the alleged 90Hz screen of the OnePlus 7 Pro with these words. Previously, the company’s CEO, Pete Lau had revealed that the company upped its display expenditure threefold this year and the new display would redefine fast and smooth.
Right now, only gaming-centric smartphones sport displays with such fast refresh rates, and if the OnePlus 7 Pro indeed launches with a 90Hz display, this could end up being its unique selling point. The standard variant of the phone, on the other hand, will reportedly stick with a conventional 60Hz screen. It is also worth mentioning that the OnePlus 7 Pro recently bagged the highest possible rating from DisplayMate.
The OnePlus 7 series will formally be launched on May 14 and it goes without saying that the OnePlus 7 Pro and its 5G variant will probably be considerably more expensive than the regular model. OnePlus phones initially shot to fame because of their affordability and it remains to be seen how consumers will respond to a price hike.
The company has already been raising prices steadily with each successive generation but if various reports are anything to go by, the most powerful variant of the OnePlus 7 Pro could cost up to $900, a price that might not seem palatable to consumers.
In a recent New York Times ad, OnePlus 7 Pro has also been touted as a bezel-less phone, with no notches, presumably hinting at the rumored pop-up camera of the phone. Other than that, the company also promises that there would neither be any bloatware nor would the apps lag.
OnePlus’ proprietary OxygenOS is indeed one of the best versions of Android around, and the company’s CEO had previously implied that the upcoming OnePlus phones will unleash a new era of fast and smooth by a clever combination of hardware and software.
In short, it sure seems that the company wants to leave no stone unturned to make sure that the phones build upon the success of the OnePlus 6T. However, given the current status of the smartphone market, it will be interesting to see how it goes.
