According to a report by 91mobiles, OPPO is discontinuing its F series of smartphones on a global scale, and is replacing it with the Reno series smartphones. This does make sense, in one hand, as the company announced its Reno flagship not long ago, a first true flagship from OPPO in a long, long time.
If this information ends up being true, the OPPO F11 and F11 Pro will basically be the company’s last F series smartphones. In any case, 91mobiles says that a “reliable source close to the matter” said that the company completed its 10-year anniversary in China, and is looking to make some changes to its lineup. The source also noted that the changes will be reflected in India as well, where the company completed its 5-year anniversary, and it’s obvious that OPPO is pushing its Reno lineup in Europe as well.
OPPO had actually announced two Reno-branded smartphones back in April, the Snapdragon 710-powered OPPO Reno, and the Snapdragon 855-powered OPPO Reno 10X Zoom Edition. It is worth noting that the latter will also be available in a 5G variant in some markets, where 5G will become available in the near future.
The OPPO Reno mid-ranger and flagship look almost the same, but there are quite a few differences on the inside. The OPPO Reno flagship is fueled by the Snapdragon 855 64-bit octa-core processor, while it has a really high screen-to-body ratio. OPPO managed to achieve this by including a pop-up camera in the phone, but not your regular pop-up camera, the so-called shark fin pop-up camera.
The phone was announced in both 6GB and 8GB RAM variants, while its camera setup is one of its main selling points. The phone includes a 48-megapixel main sensor, Sony’s IMX586 sensor, which is included in the HONOR View20, HONOR 20 series, and the OnePlus 7 series. In addition to that, the phone is also equipped with an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 13-megapixel periscope telephoto camera. The company actually utilizes technology similar to the one Huawei included in its P30 Pro flagship.
OPPO’s VOOC 3.0 fast charging is included in this package as well, along with a larger 4,065mAh battery, while the device features a 6.6-inch fullHD+ display. Android 9 Pie comes pre-installed on the device, along with OPPO’s ColorOS 6.0, while Hi-Res audio is also a part of the package.
The standard variant of the device is fueled by the Snapdragon 710, and it has a bit more modest specs overall. The standard model does not come with the periscope camera on the back, it includes a smaller display (6.4-inch one), and it packs the same fast charging as the flagship model (VOOC 3.0).
It remains to be seen in how many regions will OPPO push its Reno series, but in any case, we can expect to see more of these smartphones in the coming years, while the OPPO F series is a thing of the past. OPPO did not release a proper flagship phone for years, it relied on powerful mid-range phones, and that seemed to work for them, but this year the company decided to mix things up a bit, and compete on a higher level yet again.
