In addition to announcing a brand new TV series during its press conference, Xiaomi also announced a new high-end phone. As expected, the Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G got announced in China.
The Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G is an upgraded variant of the Mi 9
This smartphone looks essentially the same as the Xiaomi Mi 9. You can think of it as an upgraded variant of the Mi 9 that was announced earlier this year. The Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G does support 5G connectivity, as its name says. This phone includes Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X50 modem in order to make that happen.
That modem works in collaboration with the Snapdragon 855 Plus 64-bit octa-core processor. As most of you already know, this is the most powerful processor that Qualcomm announced to date.
Before we delve further into the spec sheet, let’s talk about the design for a bit. Considering that this phone is made in the Mi 9’s image, it is made out of metal and glass.
Three vertically-aligned cameras are placed on the back of the device, in the same place as on the Mi 9. Xiaomi’s logo is placed back there as well, and the same goes for an LED flash.
The Mi 9 Pro 5G includes a tiny dewdrop display notch, and extremely thin bezels all around. An in-display fingerprint scanner is also included here, an optical one.
The Snapdragon 855 Plus, 12GB of RAM, 4,000mAh battery & 30W fast wireless charging
The Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G includes the very same 6.39-inch fullHD+ AMOLED display that ships on its predecessor. The phone is also equipped with 8GB / 12GB of RAM and 128GB / 256GB / 512GB of storage.
Xiaomi decided to improve things in the battery department. Instead of a 3,300mAh battery, the company included a 4,000mAh unit here. Charging has also been improved compared to the predecessor.
The Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G supports 40W wired fast charging, and 30W wireless fast charging. That’s not all, though, the phone also supports reverse wireless charging up to 10W. Android 9 Pie comes pre-installed on it, with MIUI 11 on top. Two SIM card slots are also included, by the way.
48-megapixel (f/1.75 aperture, 0.8um pixel size, PDAF), 12-megapixel (f/2.2 aperture, telephoto, 10um pixel size, PDAF), and 16-megapixel (f/2.2 aperture, ultrawide, 1.0um pixel size, PDAF) cameras are included on the back of the phone. A single 20-megapixel camera (f/2.0 aperture, 0.9um pixel size) sits on the front.
Four variants have been announced
The phone comes in four variants. Two of those variants are equipped with 8GB of RAM, while the other two come with 12GB of RAM. A variant with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage is priced at 3,699 Yuan ($521). That same RAM model with 256GB of storage costs 3,799 Yuan ($535). A 12GB RAM variant with 256GB of storage is priced at 4,099 Yuan ($577), while the top-end variant with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage costs 4,299 Yuan ($605) in China.
This phone is expected to reach other markets, but Xiaomi did not share any info just yet. It is also worth noting that the device comes in Dream White and Titanium Black color variants. It will be available for pre-order today, in China, and go on sale on September 27.
