Huawei Canada has released a new statement regarding its CFO Meng Wanzhou, and its legal battle in Canada. The company’s spokesperson said that the company believes the judicial system will prove Meng Wahzhou’s innocence.
Huawei’s spokesperson said that it cannot give specific comments regarding an ongoing legal proceeding, but he did say that the company believes in Canada’s judicial system.

He also mentioned that Huawei fully backs its CFO, Meng Wanzhou, as she is in pursuit of both “justice and freedom”. The company hopes that Ms. Meng will soon be together with her family, colleagues, and friends.

China sent an appeal to Canada to release Meng Wanzhou, hours before she was scheduled to appear in court. That appeal was not accepted by Canada, it seems, as the country seems determined to sort things out in court.
Now, for those of you who are out of the loop, this hearing will focus on whether U.S. allegations are also a crime in Canada. Meng Wanzhou is actually facing extradition to the U.S. as well.
The U.S. asked Canada to deliver Ms. Wanzhou on several occasions thus far, but that did not happen, at least not yet. This trial could take months, maybe even years, who knows. It’s really difficult to predict at this point.
Ms. Wanzhou’s trial is not Huawei’s only problem at the moment
Ms. Wanzhou’s case is not Huawei’s only issue at the moment. The company has been placed on the trade blacklist by the U.S., which, amongst other things, prevents Huawei from using Google services on its devices.
That caused for a very limited release of the company’s flagship phones, the Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro. Huawei is working on its very own alternatives for Google’s apps and services, and those will probably debut with the Huawei P40 on a global scale.
In any case, the company has its hands full at the moment, of that there is no doubt. Despite all of those issues, however, Huawei managed to sell a record number of smartphones last year.
It will be interesting to see what will happen this year, though, especially if the trade ban doesn’t get removed. Huawei is one of the world’s largest smartphone manufacturers, and it would be a shame to see such an important competitor to lag behind.
It is worth noting that the U.S. already signed its first trade deal with China, though Huawei was not included. That whole situation will hopefully be sorted out in the near future, though.
