Huawei may soon launch a new pair of earbuds under its Mate brand. The company recently filed a trademark for the moniker “MatePod” with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) with the description including “headsets, earphones, and speakers.”
According to LetsGoDigital, the trademark was filed with EUIPO on January 6, 2020. The same name was also trademarked with the United Kingdom Intellectual Property Office (IPO) on the same date.
Huawei already launches several products, including smartphones, notebooks, and tablets under its Mate brand. The company’s foldable smartphone series also carries the Mate branding.
The Huawei Mate X, which was finally released in November last year after multiple delays, will be succeeded by the Mate Xs and the Mate X2 this year.
Huawei MatePod could launch alongside the P40 smartphones
Last year in March, Huawei launched the FreeLace wireless headset alongside the P30 and P30 Pro flagships. The company then introduced the FreeBuds 3 wireless earbuds at IFA 2019 in September, days before it launched the Mate 30 series of smartphones.
Now for 2020, Huawei seems to be looking to bring a fresh set of earbuds with a new name. Interestingly, MatePod sounds quite similar to the company’s tablet lineup MatePad.
It’s unclear whether the MatePod would replace Huawei’s FreeBuds or the company is planning to simultaneously run two series of wireless earbuds as well, just like it does with its flagship smartphones.
The former seems more likely, though. The company probably wants to streamline things by bringing different product categories under the same Mate branding.
Speculations are that the MatePod earbuds will launch alongside Huawei’s P40 flagships sometime in March 2020. However, there’s also a possibility that the buds would arrive along with the Mate 40 series later in the year. These are mere speculations as of now, though.
Talking about Huawei’s P40 smartphones, reports suggest the company is planning to launch three models of the flagship. Along with Huawei P40 and P40 Pro, there may also come a Porsche edition or a ‘Max’ variant of the device.
A recently leaked render revealed that the P40 Pro may feature a total of seven cameras, five at the back and two at front. It will run on the Kirin 990 processor, which makes 5G support mandatory.
Android 10 will be onboard but chances of it getting Google Mobile Services (GMS) are very slim. The US government isn’t going to loosen up on Huawei just yet. And that is precisely why the company says survival will be the first priority in 2020.
