Motorola is making a return to the flagship smartphone market with its upcoming Motorola Edge+, which is also the company’s first 5G smartphone. It appears the company has an affordable version of it in the works as well. The device in question is called the Motorola Edge, live images of which have leaked online revealing some key details.
90Hz Waterfall display and powerful cameras
The Motorola Edge features the so-called “waterfall” display with curves on the sides, images shared by XDA Developers reveal. There’s enough room on the edges for a physical power button and volume control buttons, though.
It is a 6.67-inch Full-HD+ (2340 x 1080) panel with a relatively smaller single hole-punch on the top left corner. The display supports a 90Hz refresh rate, but Motorola lets you choose a 60Hz refresh rate to save battery. There’s also an “auto” mode that uses “AI to always show the optimal refresh rate.”
The display hole-punch cutout houses a 25-megapixel front-facing camera. The device gets a triple camera setup on the back. The 64-megapixel primary camera uses 4-in-1 pixel binning technology to produce superior 16-megapixel images.
It is flanked by a 16-megapixel wide-angle camera and an 8-megapixel telephoto lens. Accompanying the vertically-stacked cameras is a laser autofocus system and a dual-LED flash.
Snapdragon 765, 6GB RAM
Under the hood of the Motorola Edge is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 chipset with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, expandable storage via a microSD card. Motorola may also offer this phone in other memory configurations, though.
You also get a 3.5mm headphone jack, NFC connectivity, dual speakers, and dual SIM support on the Motorola Edge. There’s a hybrid SIM card tray at the top that accepts a microSD card and nanoSIM card or dual nanoSIM cards.
The leaked Motorola Edge images appear to show the Motorola logo on the back flat. This suggests that the device doesn’t have a rear-mounted capacitive fingerprint scanner. Instead, it may get an in-display optical fingerprint sensor.
XDA couldn’t confirm if this phone supports 5G connectivity. It like does though, since it’s powered by the Snapdragon 765 SoC, which comes with an integrated 5G modem.
Fueling this phone is a 4,500mAh battery that charges through a USB Type-C port. There’s no wireless charging, though the phone should support wired fast charging.
The Motorola Edge runs Android 10 out of the box. And since it’s not a part of the Android One program, Motorola’s near-stock experience should be on top.
There’s no telling as to when Motorola will launch this phone. Considering the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, which has forced a global shutdown, the launch may not happen anytime soon. Motorola will probably wait until the market starts picking up the pace again.
