Google has started pushing an update out to Stadia today that slightly changes the connection status information you see as a player.
Prior to this little update, the connection status would be something that you could use to not only see the strength of your connection, but indicate if you were getting 4K resolution or not.
These two factors of the setup will no longer be linked together. Instead they will both be separate labels from each other. They will however continue to remain in the same place you’ve always found that information.
Stadia connection status labels will not be tied to 4K
Going forward, whatever the strength of your internet connection, that won’t indicate whether you have 4K resolution for your games or not.
Once you open the Stadia panel, you’ll see the tab for connection status and it’ll display your strengths as either excellent, fair, or game might stop. Both “fair” and “game might stop” are also completely new labels.
Aside from the connection strength, if you’re actually getting 4K then there will be an icon designating that, just like there always has been. But it’ll show up regardless of what your connection strength is. If you aren’t getting 4K, the icon won’t be there, even if you have an excellent connection.
These new changes will be rolling out over the next four days
Some users will already be able to see these new labels in the connection status part of their menu while in a game.
Google does state though that the changes will be rolling out over the next four days. So it might be Friday before you notice any changes.
This is a fairly minor update and isn’t really introducing any new features that will change the functionality of Stadia in any way. It’s simply being put in place to give users a more accurate depiction of how well the service will run.
Google also points out that these were changes that it decided to make based on user feedback in the community. So these are changes which current users have been asking for.
That means Google is listening to its user base. And that means good things for the future of the service as it continues to mature. Now if we could just get wireless support on the Stadia controller for Chrome and for Android phones.
Not to mention Family Sharing. Then the feature set for Stadia would be a lot more robust.
