An update to the list of 5G compatible phones meant for Boom! Mobile may inadvertently have given away an upcoming 5G variant of the Pixel 4a. Boom! Mobile is not among the more well-known of MVNOs in the US but operates off of Verizon and AT&T networks. Spotted by XDA Developers, if accurate, that could mean a 5G version will be coming to those carriers at the very least.
That’s unless the listing itself was in error. But there have been prior reports of an incoming 5G Pixel 4a. So it does seem plausible.
What indication is there that this is a Pixel 4a 5G?
The biggest indicator that this is a 5G Pixel-branded handset from Google, and that it’s the Pixel 4a, is its model designation. Boom! Mobile lists the device as the “Google G025E.” That model designation is almost identical to those found for the Pixel 4a at the FCC. Those filings list the Pixel 4a as designations “G025J,” “G025N,” and “G025M.”
The fact that this is listed under the segment of the company’s site for 5G-specific devices points to a 5G Pixel 4a. The phone is listed alongside model numbers for the Samsung Galaxy S20, LG Velvet, Galaxy A71 5G, and Moto G 5G.
When might this phone arrive?
This news effectively confirms earlier reports that a 5G variant is coming. The phone was spotted with 5G support in an earlier code teardown of the Google app. But that doesn’t mean it’s going to arrive soon or alongside its 4G counterparts. The device could arrive much later — after 5G is better established.
If that’s the case, it would likely be around the same time or just before the arrival of the Pixel 5. Otherwise, the search giant may reveal the device along with the rest of the Pixel 4a series. That’s expected later this month.
The Pixel 4a is expected to be powered by the Snapdragon 765G, at least 6GB of RAM, and at least 64GB storage. That’s partially based on leaks but also based on previous ‘a’ series Pixel handsets. The Pixel 3a launched with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. That was powered by the Snapdragon 670. So, realistically, up to 128GB storage could be a possibility as well.
