World's First Smartphone With Under-Display Camera Coming On September 1

The world’s very first smartphone with an under-display camera will launch on September 1. The device will be announced in China, and ZTE is the company behind it.

We’re talking about the ZTE Axon 20 5G, a device that surfaced on TENAA (China’s equivalent to the FCC) recently. The company shared the news of this device’s launch via a press release, actually.

Such information usually comes through Weibo, but not this time. ZTE announced this in English, via a press release, signalizing that this phone will be available outside of China.

The world’s first smartphone with under-display camera will launch on September 1

That is to be expected, as the company’s ‘Axon’ lineup of smartphones is oriented towards global markets as well. ZTE flat out confirmed the name of the device, and that it will be the world’s first smartphone with an under-display camera, while adding September 1 as its launch day.

ZTE says that this smartphone will “promote the development of display technologies in the smartphone industry, thereby bringing revolutionized experiences to all consumers.”

Now, considering that this phone surfaced on TENAA, we do have quite a few information about it. The ZTE Axon 20 5G will be made out of metal and glass, and feature four cameras on the back.

The device’s back side will be curved towards the sides, while the phone will include a flat display. Its bezels will basically be non-existent, mainly thanks to the under-display camera, and also an under-display fingerprint scanner.

The ZTE Axon 20 5G will be fueled by the Snapdragon 765G, it seems. The clock speed that was mentioned over at TENAA fits that processor. The Snapdragon 865 and 865 Plus are clocked a bit higher.

The phone will include a really large display, and plenty of RAM

The device will feature a 6.92-inch fullHD+ OLED display, and it will arrive in 6GB, 8GB, and 12GB RAM variants. Those three variants will include 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB of internal storage.

A 64-megapixel main camera will be backed by an 8-megapixel ultra-wide unit. You’ll also find a 2-megapixel depth camera on the back, along with a 2-megapixel macro camera.

A 32-megapixel camera will sit on the front side of the phone. A 4,120mAh battery will also be included in the package by the way. Fast charging was not mentioned, but it will be included as well.

That is basically everything we know about this phone thus far. It’s a bit surprising that this phone won’t include a flagship SoC, but that will make it possible for ZTE to keep its price tag down a bit lower.
