Samsung Will Update Its 2018 Flagship Phones With One UI 2.5

The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 are eligible for the One UI 2.5 update. But there’s no word on if those devices will also get Android 11.

Samsung updated its software page today, to note that One UI 2.5 will be coming to the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9. Which might be a bit surprising to owners of those devices, considering the fact that Samsung wasn’t even sure if it was going to bring One UI 2.1 to those devices earlier this year. And the updates were very much delayed. So this could be a mistake, as Sammobile points out.

Don’t count on Android 11 though

While Samsung is looking to push One UI 2.5 to these older devices, that were released in 2018, Samsung has not yet confirmed if these are getting Android 11.

We do know that the Galaxy S10 and Note 10 series are getting updated to Android 11, as those are the first round of devices getting three years of OS updates from Samsung. But the Galaxy S9 and Note 9 may not be as lucky.

It would be a nice surprise to see Android 11 come to the Galaxy S9, S9+ and Note 9 though. Especially since most owners aren’t expecting to get it. It’ll also give Samsung some style points, and potentially keep some of those customers. Even though Samsung really wants those customers to spend money on a new phone.

Don’t expect to see One UI 2.5 anytime soon

Samsung started rolling out One UI 2.5 to the Galaxy S20 this morning. So don’t expect to see that coming to the Galaxy S9 and Note 9 smartphones anytime soon.

The company will need to roll it out to the Galaxy Note 10 and S10 series first, before going back to the Note 9 and Galaxy S9 series. That’s just how these updates work.

There are some pretty cool new features available in One UI 2.5 too. The biggest new feature is wireless DeX. So you can use DeX on any Miracast TV. Which is pretty neat, especially if you’re doing presentations and such. However, that may not come to the Galaxy S9 and Note 9. There could be some technical hurdles that Samsung needs to overcome for those two devices to get wireless DeX. And the hardware might not be powerful enough. Even though they are both running on the Snapdragon 845 chipset.

There’s also pro video mode available in the camera now, and the ability to easily share WiFi credentials. Among many other features.
