Qualcomm is planning to announce two new Snapdragon flagship processors. There’s nothing new here, really, as the company does that every year. It releases a base flagship SoC, and then later on, it comes up with the ‘Plus’ model.
The same will happen with the next generation, as both the Snapdragon 875 and 875+ look set to arrive. This information comes from Roland Quandt, a well-known tipster.
Codenames for two flagship Snapdragon processors have been spotted
Mr. Quandt shared the information via his Twitter account. He said that the Snapdragon 875 is codenamed ‘Lahaina’, and that there is also ‘Lahaina+’ mentioned.
He cannot be sure, but he believes these are the Snapdragon 875 and 875+, respectively. The Snapdragon 875 comes with the SM8350 model number, it seems. That is all the information he shared.
The Snapdragon 875 is expected to arrive before the end of this year. That is the case every year when it comes to Qualcomm’s flagship processors. The Snapdragon 875+ will follow next year, in early H2, most probably.
The Snapdragon 865 and 865+ are currently amongst the most powerful mobile processors in the market. Well, next to Apple’s offering, they are at the very top. The same is expected to happen next year as well.
It remains to be seen how much will Samsung improve its premium Exynos offering. The Exynos 990 is not up to par with the Snapdragon 865 or 865+, so we’ll see how will the Exynos 1000 aka Exynos 2100 fare.
We know very little about the Snapdragon 875 at the moment
Not much is known about the Snapdragon 875 at this point. We do know that it will be a 64-bit octa-core processor, and that it will be made using a 5nm manufacturing process.
It’s also interesting that Samsung will manufacture this processor, not TSMC. Qualcomm was planning to go with TSMC, but opted for Samsung in the end. It is rumored that the reason behind it is Apple, actually.
TSMC seems to be caught with a ton of orders for the Apple A12 Bionic SoC, that it may not be able to meet Qualcomm’s demand. These are only rumors, though, the information has not been confirmed just yet.
Whatever the case may be, a new Snapdragon flagship is coming later this year, and the puzzle is slowly, but surely, coming together. The Snapdragon 865 got announced in early December last year, so the same thing may happen with the Snapdragon 875. This name hasn’t been confirmed just yet either, but chances are that’s the name Qualcomm will go with.
